Just Dance: The most depressing game of 2010?

Remember how you felt when you first saw – or God forbid, played – Wii Music? Remember the shock when you first learned just how many damn people are subscribed to Farmville? Remember the fear when you first noticed the ratio between actual games and baby games at your local store?

Steel yourself, because today is another one of those days. Ready?

Depressing Fact #1: Just Dance has now sold over two million copies since releasing last November. Two million.

Depressing Context: This is Just Dance.

Depressing Fact #2: Just Dance's sales numbers are double those of Bayonetta, which released on both 360 and PS3, and which scored a Metacritic review average of 88. Just Dance is Wii only and scored an average of 47.

Depressing Context: This is what people look like when they play
Just Dance.

Depressing Fact #3: Just Dance recently became the #1 selling game in the UK, according to a report published by our sister site, Edge.

Depressing Context: This is what professional dancers, hired by Ubisoft for an official publicity event, look like when they play Just Dance.

Depressing Fact #4: Just Dance, by topping the UK charts, has surpassed titles like Pokémon, FIFA, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Modern Warfare 2 and, in an ironic semantic twist, Just Cause 2.

Depressing Context: This is what a random Teen Wolf cosplayer at WonderCon in San Francisco looks like when playing Just Dance. The fact that he doesn't come across as any more ridiculous than the non-costumed people playing Just Dance is a sad statement indeed.

This could be the future of gaming. Are you ready?

I agree the game might seem a bit "depressing"... but you'd really have to look at it in a different way to be able to appreciate it? Will I ever buy it? No. Did I enjoy the hell out of it at PAX East 2010 in Boston? Oh hell yes! At PAX East it was easily one of the strongest attractions of the show. It was especially engaging watching some of the frag dolls and frag doll cadettes get up on stage and play. Example #1 Example #2 So yes.... maybe not the best game ever. But in a certain situation.... just try and see if it doesn't brighten up a party / event.

the following people are now on suicide watch: all gamers
  • Conman93 - April 8, 2010 12:21 p.m.

Think of all the sales that are being stolen from games that deserve them eg. Dead Space Extraction, madworld and of course, OKAMI !!!!
  • philipshaw - April 8, 2010 10:27 a.m.

I knw this had to bad after Matt Cundy on TRUK podcast said how much he hated it

the sad thing is if there is alot more money to be made from things like this rather than a gamers game then in 10 years time or so this is all there will be. no final fantasy but instead Just Dance XII, no wonder nintendo is doing so well, there selling a console which is to be honest a ten year old system with motion controls so producing it is very cheap, much cheaper than the selling price anyway, nintendo are the smartest company in the video game industry, they've probably made much more than xbox and playstation, you could say i'm a bit of a fanboy because i did grow up with nintendo ever since i could remember playing snes with my elder brother but i dont play wii nearly as much as my 360 or playstation for obvious reasons, the majority of games are shit, its a sad day for us real gamers, but an almighty good one for these casual gamers that i've never seen in my life. i still really like the DS though. There is a simple reason why this game is selling so well. People buying this don't care that it is a crappy game because they don't play games to play, they play to look good. Because, like, you know, like, looking, like, good, is, like, totally the most important thing ever! They see pretty people on commercials dancing and since dancing is always sexy, they figure they will be sexy and pretty too if they buy just dance. Then those same desperate people can say to all their friends "OMG! I sooooo have Just Dance too!" Gotta love the moronic "me too" society of style first substance 5th. Stupid Sheeple.

knightdehumidifier beat me to it, the same movie and all. but i still have to say it: crap sells while originality and creativity scare the hell out of the general public. it's nothing to be happy about, but it's not new and its not exclusive to gaming. it's not even limited to the "dumb people" arts; the next novel by either dan brown or stephanie meyer is guaranteed to dominate the best sellers list.
  • Freeman93 - April 7, 2010 11:57 p.m.

@alexkirk: You sound like a stupid politician: MW2 supports the war? yeah because showing how corrupt and greedy the US army can be is a real encouragement. Bayonetta demeening to woman? Wow she has big breasts, what would you rather her be wearing a burkha and battle as a feminist by burning bras? Do us all a favour, delete your account on here, go and buy Just Dance and join in with the other idiots that are gradually destroying proper gaming. You disgrace the name of game.

I think the only reason I suffer through farmville is a complex to have a better farm than the other guys at school.
  • CH3BURASHKA - April 7, 2010 10:07 p.m.

This gun is looking tastier by the second.
  • alexkirk - April 7, 2010 10:01 p.m.

wow. i actually disagree with you GR. Just Dance is a family game! Wii is a family system its not mind baffling that a game like that would sell well. Also im very happy that its sales surpassed the sales of MW2.MW2 is the most war supporting game ever and i dont support it. Also im pretty sure most people wont buy bayonetta because they dont want video game t*** everywhere when they play a game. That game is very demeening to women. So dont make a facepalm. Just Dance looks fun and i wanna get it after looking at those people. Fine they look like idiots, but you forgot to mention they look like they are having a hell of a lot of fun too.
  • WhiskeyBit - April 7, 2010 10 p.m.

Huh @KnightDehumidifier Not Zeppelin! And what's this?.. Hendrix too?!?! It can't be!! Those are my two favorite artists on this planet!! What a shame the music industry (and gaming) has come to...
  • KnightDehumidifier - April 7, 2010 9:41 p.m.

Other depressing facts: Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen sold more tickets in theaters than The Wrestler, The Hurt Locker, and Crazy Heart. Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana is currently on pace to/already has outsold more concerts than Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles. While many awards went to Arrested Development, it suffered a painful cancellation that many cannot remedy. However that isn't stopping many other sitcoms that are far worse that still get picked up for numerous seasons. There are worse things to note, these are just a sample.
  • DarkWithin - April 7, 2010 9:19 p.m.

and what's worse is that they'll make a Just Dance 2 and a Just Dance 3 and so on until we're all brainwashed.
  • DarkWithin - April 7, 2010 9:16 p.m.

By next year we'll be playing Party Babyz and having tea parties with our toys if this kind of stuff keeps happening.
  • n00b - April 7, 2010 9:16 p.m.

on the same topic every one reading this should get bayonetta if you haven't gotten a chance yet. wikid awesome game. also resonance of fate a great game that will probably not sell as much as it should have
  • Ddz53 - April 7, 2010 9:14 p.m.

Awwww gaaawd.... Our hobby is slowly getting killed by this kind of crap
  • n00b - April 7, 2010 9:12 p.m.

must... resist... urge... to... explode... into... a... barrage... of.. swear... word....!!!!!!!!
  • TURbo - April 7, 2010 8:04 p.m. Look at those sales. Just look at them. The worst week was the first week, and its consistently selling, like there isn't enough supply.
