It Happened One Night

Blessedly free of the ‘Capra-Corn’ that would dog the director’s later work, this much-imitated romcom – winner of five Oscars in 1935 – finds Clark Gable’s unemployed reporter joining forces with Claudette Colbert’s on-the-lam heiress, on a cross-country road trip that sees her shallow socialite redeemed by his honest commoner.

Both stars loathed the experience yet turned in two of their most enduring performances.

Tame by today’s standards, it’s worth remembering just how shocking a glimpse of Colbert’s car-halting stocking would have been in Depression-era America.
