How to play Def Jam Rapstar without saying the N-word

Def Jam Rapstar is the first game absolutely dedicated to hip hop, and will feature over 40 songs, proprietary voice recognition, and a community video sharing feature (like YouTube, only for amateur rappers... or, like YouTube). We don't doubt that it'll be a hit, and we're actually pretty excited to give it a play. There's just one thing...

You know... that word. It's censored in the game as "N---," leaving it up to the player to decide what to say (you can be silent without penalty). If you're like me, as in, require sunscreen when sitting next to an energy-saving light bulb, there's no way you can drop the N-bomb without looking like a complete ass. It just isn't worth it.

Above: I'm not B.I.G.

But if you spend every other beat contemplating centuries of racial tension, your spitting will be far from dope, which is why awkward white kids everywhere should prepare in advance. Here are a couple tips to help said awkward white kids avoid any embarrassment when they upload their pale selves to defjamrapstar.com.

A. No matter what you say, never pronounce the last syllable. Rookie mistake.

B. If you're amongst potentially sensitive friends, you should avoid saying the word at all. Lucky for you, rappers use words that rhyme with a lot of words, and nyuuughhpggffm is no exception. It's easy: trigger, figure, digger, rigor, vigor, bigger, H.R. Giger.

We've made this excerpt from 50 Cent's "I Get Money" racial sensitivity free. We highlighted our change in case you don't catch it:

See? It's as easy as that. Let's try another. This time, we'll just rhyme the word-in-question with what came before it, which is pretty easy to do in Kanye's "Gold Digger":

Sure it's redundant, but at least you avoided that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, and you won't stumble while competing against your friends in Battle Mode.

You can also go the route of GamePro's AJ Glasser and just replace every non-PC word with a word that's just funny to say, as she has in this excerpt from "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang":

Who knew Dr. Dre was such a big Battlestar and Mork & Mindy/Tribes fan?

Def Jam Rapstar is coming this fall (it was previously scheduled for winter) to the 360, PS3, and Wii. The complete list of announced songs is:

2 Pac - I Get Around
50 Cent - I Get Money
Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg - Nuthin’ But a “G” Thang
Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx - Gold Digger
Lil’ Wayne - A Milli
Notorius B.I.G. - Juicy
Slick Rick - Children’s Story
T.I. featuring Rihanna - Live Your Life
Wu Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M.
Young Jeezy featuring Kanye West - Put On

We just received a batch of new screens, which you can see all big like in our screenshot viewer.

Also, censorship is dumb.

Excellent Idea, most hate Polication Correctness. But this is right. Im Black, and I find it an insult using "N" word, doesnt who uses, its comparable to a swear word. And those that use it have very small small brain and werent brought up right. Because they have no respect for there parents !! An Excellent Rapper you poetry to get his message across, not lazyness.

I think this is just a situation where it's handled on a case by case basis. If you are amongst black friends, just don't say it- you'll make things needlessly awkward. If you are not amongst black friends, just say nothing, or end it with "gga." Safest of all is just saying my personal favorite, as Tyler put it- Ben Stillah.

When I told my friend about this game and we talked about what they would do about swearing. Then he asked me about the N word. I think any white people buying a game dedicated to hip hop get what you Americans call 'a hood pass'. That being said I do predict media controversy when this game is released.

totally just depends on who you're with... it's like fag, and all those other words - if you're with friends who know exactly what you mean, and it's an accepted term (and i'm not on about little immature douschebag kids who just think it's funny)...with my friends (both white and black) it's used in exactly the same way as 'dude', or 'bro' - there is no derogatory intent. However, regardless of your own intent, people have to respect that not everybody has the same interpretation/understanding and so whenever you are with people you don't know well/in public or who expresly don't like the word you shoudl avoid it. It's just common sense, and i wish people would stop getting so wound up by pc-this or pc-that. Or - If all else fails, resort to Wigga :D

Its just slang..... just necessarily means a person. How are doing Joe? Can translate into many things but mean the same thing For Example: Whats good Joe? Whats good Son? Whats good N***a? All mean the same damn thing when I'm talking to joe lol.

You kno what.... I am tired of all this politically correct garbage people are saying. A lot of words changed in meaning throughout history. I'm black and I could care less if someone uses the N words as long as the context is not something used as racially demeaning. I have many "white" friends who grew up in black neighborhoods and use the word but they are not looked any different. Being Gay didnt always mean being a Homosexual it just changed. The N word has been used far before my generation and I'm an 80's baby. To me I see it as people changed the meaning to show that it doesnt really meani crap. I'm tired of this whole black people bringing themselves down but all in all it's the people who view themselves as being brought down which is the real let down. Tired of this black empowerment crap.

Hey now, Tyler, Brett said Giger in the podcast recently, and he pronounced it GEE-GUR or GUY-GUR like the radioactivity monitor, not GIGGER like how you say it should rhyme. The way you want it, it's just eye-rhyme. "WIKI-PARAZ NOISE" I thought you said your girlfriend was a vampire, not you. Were you bitten and changed?
  • RebornKusabi - April 14, 2010 2:44 a.m.

If I ever played this game, I would substitute "that word" with "Batman. I listen to some rap music, more specifically I love the 90's rap music far more than many recent stuff. The purpose of what I am trying to say here is that I love the music, but I never repeat the word... I just substitute it with "Batman" lol Seriously, listen to rap music and with a lyrics sheet, replace any use of the "N-Word" with Batman and laugh at the hilarity!

This isn't the 1950's anymore Cyberninja, you don't have to apologize to whites anymore. Sorry, couldn't resist a civil rights joke and it seemed to fit considering the content of the article.

  • Cyberninja - April 14, 2010 1:11 a.m.

i as a black male find it rude that rappers of the same color would mock our history like that but we all cant be MLKs and barack obamas can we.
  • Cyberninja - April 14, 2010 1:09 a.m.

as a black person myself i find it very pointless for us as afican americans to be insulting our ansestors after want we went through as a people and thats one reason i dont listen to music everyone would expect me to listen to this crap and then i would be riducled when they found stuff they wouldnt expect on my ipod if i ever get one
  • masterj2k11 - April 14, 2010 12:45 a.m.

I'm just gonna replace the "n word" with african american. And instead of cracker ill say white devil. Cuz I'm politically correct. I'm so gunna say chink like a mofo though.
  • RogueRED - April 14, 2010 12:24 a.m.

I knew an article like this would be soon. I know lots of white people who listen to rap, therefore, several will buy this game. And its a proven fact that nyughm is said in 98% of all rap songs. I dont know too many who are still racilly sensitive about it(Im not), but still this is a nice safezone without censorship.
