Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary review

  • The new look never ceases to amaze
  • Fan service hidden in every mission
  • Classic gameplay unaltered from 2001
  • Classic gameplay not as classic as you remember
  • Only half the multiplayer you might have expected
  • Were there always this many Hunters?!

10 years, two sequels, two spinoffs, one prequel and countless companion media later, it’s remarkable how many gamers still say that the original Halo is their favorite entry in the entire franchise. Is that opinion based on objective quality or subjective nostalgia? With this anniversary edition of the classic console shooter, we have an opportunity to both relive… and reevaluate.

To start, though, let’s set one thing straight. This is more than a special edition and much, much more than an HD upgrade. Unlike recent re-releases of Ico, God of War, Resident Evil, Sly Cooper, Splinter Cell, Beyond Good & Evil and Prince of Persia, the visuals in Halo: Combat Evolved haven’t merely been cleaned and sharpened to appear presentable on a modern television monitor. They’re completely, breathtakingly new – the difference between getting your car washed and getting your car pimped by an MTV reality show. The structure of each scene and each area is intact, but the artists have not been at all shy in adding their own style and flourish. This is basically how the game would look if it were created for the first time this year.

We’ve included a few comparison examples below, but with the Xbox 360 controller’s back button, you can marvel at 2001 vs 2011 whenever and wherever in the game you choose. Though the switch is a little too sluggish, and can’t be used during cutscenes, it does provide an endlessly entertaining “wow” factor.

The main menu. The Halo ring, once a dull gray sidewalk on one side, is now mesmerizingly shiny and intricate. Space, once a flat matte, is now filled with unique stars, galaxies and asteroids.

Master Chief awakes from cryogenic slumber. Notice how 2001’s generic, copy-and-paste polygon people have been replaced by distinct characters with distinct outfits and distinct facial features. Also, the amount of light, color and atmosphere in each indoor environment has increased dramatically.

Outside, the depth – as well as the detail to that depth – is astounding when compared to what we found acceptable a decade ago. You believe you’re in a real 3D world, not a giant windowless room with fake sky painted on the walls and ceiling.

Even darkness looks better!

Flipping back and forth will also yield several new Easter eggs, of both a humorously random and lovingly fan devoted nature. If you’re enough of a Halo enthusiast to play this Anniversary edition, the developers at 343 Industries clearly want to reward you as much and as often as possible. To that end, they’ve also hidden a game-altering skull and backstory-revealing (possibly Halo 4 teasing) terminal in every mission. This is a love letter from them to you.

But how does the gameplay hold up? You may be surprised…

To be honest, this was everything I expected it to be, and really, I couldn't have asked for anything more.

This has been a must buy for me since it was announced. The classic gameplay won't bother me though as it's tradition to run through a couple of levels of Halo: CE every month. Granted it's been 3 months so we don't spoil anything but yeah. Knowing the difficulty would have the same values, is there a Mythic skull to increase the difficulty? Just curious. Good review and can't wait to see my first FPS remastered so beautifully.

So this is as good as halo reach? Also is that six maps total or six maps from halo 1 plus 6 from halo 2?
  • Baron164 - November 14, 2011 6:38 a.m.

I'm looking forward to running through this in coop online. I am disappointed that all the original maps weren't all remade for this. I have a sneaking suspicion they will be made up as DLC later on.

Just so you know, you never get the Hunter's gun. I'll admit you get the Fuel Rod, but it's much weaker and isn't a continuous beam. Just letting you guys know you may want to edit that. See below: "The weapon is incredibly heavy, making it suitable only for the Hunters, as no other races could carry such a massive load, showing the immense strength of the Hunter. The only known instances of it are fused directly to the Hunter's armor, located on the right "arm" of the colony, built into the Lekgolo that make up that limb. This makes the weapon impossible to be used by the player in any game."

Could we wield the Hunter's weapons in Halo 2, 3 or Reach? I can't remember ever doing that.. Also, I'm a Halo-geek to the bone, so I'm really looking forward to this.

Halo's getting another 8? I see alot of pissed off comments in the future!
  • DLSemen - November 14, 2011 6:48 a.m.

This is the most bullshit review of a game i have EVER read! GO SUCK SONY'S DICK! BITCH!
  • Hobogonigal - November 14, 2011 6:48 a.m.

About what I expected for this game. I wasn't too big into Halo when it first released (I had a PS2) but I don't mind Halo 3 so I am slightly tempted to give this a try now.

This was the first fps I ever played on the original xbox, i'm all over this updated version.

The term 'HD re-release' chills me to the bone. While playing old games that have largely been lost to time is great, it just screams 'purchase for the gullible'. It's also £30. That's robbery, considering it's the same game in different clothes. Still, the Halo series is something I've missed out on, so I'd love to give it a go one day.
  • ObliqueZombie - November 14, 2011 8:06 a.m.

But didn't you read? It's not merely an HD coat of paint--it's a whole overhaul. They didn't just trim the edges, they made entirely new people and places.
  • Burdmayn - November 14, 2011 7:15 a.m.

They changed the "Scooters are for squirts" poster? 0/10 But seriously, this seems like exactly what I expected it to be. My Amazon order already shipped out but I won't be playing the game anytime soon, Asscreed comes first.
  • Spybreak8 - November 14, 2011 7:33 a.m.

Ahh look who's reviewing another Halo game lol.
  • ObliqueZombie - November 14, 2011 8:07 a.m.

I'm still too busy with Skyrim and school. The only shooter I'll play for a while is my Bounty Hunter in SWTOR come this December. BUT! I asked for this and Battlefield 3 and Modern Warefare 3 for Christmas. I'll get my shooter fix soon enough. Definitely looking forwards to playing this if and when I get it, though.

You could never get the Hunters' weapons, and Reach had a similar health system. Halo 1 had the wimpiest hunters of all. One shot to the stomach or kidney with a pistol or sniper and they're gone. But the level design was always horribly repetitive. Every interior of The Control Room is identical, same with 343 Guilty Spark. Even I noticed that when the game came out and I was 12 or so (nobody pretend you weren't playing Halo long before you were 17). Would it have been possible to make an optional mode with assassinations, new weapons thrown in, all that good stuff? I know people who have been modding weapons, textures and enemies into the original Halo for years, but this big remake is just a professionally-developed texture pack?
  • GAYMER - November 14, 2011 8:48 a.m.

Wow biased much! How much did Sony pay you to give this game such a terrible score? Gamesradar has no foundation anymore!!! Just kidding, good review Charlie.
  • Darkhawk - November 14, 2011 9:20 a.m.

    Rayman review? Rayman review?
  • mothbanquet - November 14, 2011 9:50 a.m.

Happy with the review score, didn't really expect to be more or less. If anyone missed out on Halo:CE first time around then I'd heartily recommend this. It's still my favourite one of the series.
  • GamesRadarCharlieBarratt - November 14, 2011 10:15 a.m.

I've corrected the part about Hunters to better reflect my true criticism - their overbearing repetition - and less my obviously hazy memory of Halo's weapon encyclopedia. Apologies for the error!
