The one silver lining I can see about the PS4 forcing you to pay for PS Plus to play online, is that this SHOULD pressure them into having a much better, more stable online infrastructure, since they will no longer have the "Well, it's free anyway" defense anymore.

I dunno, I clocked in thousands of hours of quality online gaming with no issues. The stability excuse was always a lazy one.

I didn't have many problems when I did play online, though I didn't play much to begin with, so I am not exactly the perfect barometer to compare the two. Even so, stuff like the whole PSN outage, and how sloppy the PSN once was are stigmas that the free PSN had to live with, here's hoping this new paid for PSN doesn't have any of that as a result.

Competition almost always benefits the consumer. I do struggle to envision how Sony can improve Plus in ways other than improved online stability without losing money. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft tries to compete in the new gen. Should be fun to see if the two online services take turns offering different improvements and benefits.
