Ghost In The Shell review

Mamoru Oshii’s cult 1995 anime returns to cinemas

“We’re state of the art,” says cyborg cop Motoko halfway through this retina-frying cult manga adap (also hitting Blu-ray 29 September). She’s not wrong. One year shy of its 20th anniversary, Ghost In The Shell is as fresh as ever thanks to a high-def remastering and a script that provides still-relevant debates on gender and identity.

With Motoko hunting a hacker through the streets of a future world, it’s small wonder the film influenced heavy-hitters like the Wachowskis – it’s that rare example of spectacle and substance meshing beautifully.
