Game: Mirror’s Edge
Song: Still Alive
Composers: Lisa Miskovsky, Arnthor Birgisson and Rami Yacoub

Above: Sooth me, you Swedish songbird

Any type of game music can be worthwhile, and those that experienced the entire soundtrack to the amazing and amazingly underplayed Mirror’s Edge know how great its ambient, electronic soundscapes were. But in my old age (27 going on 60) I might hear the music as I’m playing, but I don’t really listen. No, I’m too busy getting angry at some puzzle or mentally composing my grocery list. However, once a game reaches its climax I’m all ears, which is when I heard and listened to Still Alive, the magnificent ending theme to Mirror’s Edge.

Swedish developers EA DICE tapped Lisa Miskovsky, a Swedish singer, to sing the stirring melody over the game’s credits. Lisa’s previous claim to fame in the English-speaking world was co-writing the song Shape of My Heart for the Backstreet Boys, which I’m sure is in your iPod playlist at all times. When Still Alive hit in 2008 it was a modest hit on both the Swedish and UK charts.

Above: Here’s the ending for those too lazy to enjoy something awesome *SPOILERS*

The game’s sweet ending, including the only first-person hugging I can recall, was made all the sweeter by the song, reminding the player that protagonist Faith had survived her terrible ordeal. It also made a nice compliment to one of the too few major games with a female star being wrapped up with a ballad by a strong woman. And lastly, you’ve got to give DICE credit for having the balls to create an ending song called Still Alive for a first-person game less than a year after Portal.

This music melts my manly heart. I loved this game for what it was worth I I only wished the story be longer. I'm one of those few who liked the game play. I think it actually kind of worked. Just needed some tweaking. Twas a very pretty game to look at over all. I want more of that!

I'm so glad I picked this game up for $15, best money I ever spent. Mirror's Edge has some of my favorite music from any game ever, kinda reminds me of Hikaru Utada's song in Kingdom Hearts, also some of my favorite music

Good job, Max, on adding this to the GMotD archives. EA is being a real asshole about the sequel. The game has been brought up in PR conversation numerous times, yet they still refuse to officially announce the sequel. What really worries me is that Dead Space was the bigger hit of the two new IP's, and it's already getting a sequel. What does that mean for Mirror's Edge 2?

I love this game and the soundtrack is amazing. I got a CD with that song on it and like 4 others for pre-ordering the game, still in constant rotation on my MP3 player. Also got a sweet Mirror's Edge T-shirt

I absolutely hate the Mirror's Edge soundtrack. Recently I was looking to play an old game that I had previously beaten and I came across Mirror's Edge. I thought, "Oh yeah, I had good memories of that game! That was fun!" I loaded it up, listened to the opening song and groaned. It's such a... just... annoying, sterile and pretentious song. I immediately took the disk out and played through Brutal Legend for the second time, GETTIN' 100% LIKE A BOSS. Now THAT'S a game with a great (albeit licensed) soundtrack. Fuck Yea.

  • NearNRiver - August 21, 2010 5:52 p.m.

I like Mirror's Edge, and the song, but I have to say the other Still Alive always takes my heart away, while this one...
  • Strangleme - August 21, 2010 4:36 p.m.

Shit I love this song!!! I've never played this game and sometimes they play this in the background on TalkRadar. I can't believe I haven't picked up this game yet. Excellent choice Hank!!!
  • grappler51 - August 21, 2010 2:26 p.m.

I loved this game! Sure you died a lot, but I still liked it, and I played it on PC! I love the music in this game, but never listened to this song that closely, its pretty good.
  • Gene - August 21, 2010 12:08 p.m.

The music really is lovely - I remember hearing it over the montage at the end of the (brilliant and, unfortunately, misleading) demo. It was on youtube. A shame about the rest of the game. Ruined by a schizophrenic design philosophy and overcomplicated controls. How much better would the game have been, for example, if there simply hadn't been any enemies? Think about it. All the time in the world to deal with what, effectively could have been massive, brilliant physics puzzles. And it should have been open-world, multi-linear. It could have rivalled Deus Ex. Such a shame.
  • JohnnyApplesperm - August 21, 2010 9:37 a.m.

This was a tri... wait a sec. Very neat song, I've been wanting to get Mirrors Edge for awhile, I should hurry up and play it. Can't believe they named it Still Alive after Portal, but then again it was probably recorded long before Portal released, and why change the name of your song just because some other game surprised everyone with its own song of the same name.
  • kompressorlogik - August 21, 2010 7:05 a.m.

I love Mirror's Edge and hope to see a sequel soon. Thanks for a great GMotD, Hank! Still Alive is so damn catchy, I could listen to it all day. reCaptcha: hyximan 188--203; WTF?!
  • HDBawllz - August 21, 2010 6:52 a.m.
