G4TV reportedly changing direction away from gaming programming

According to a report going around today the G4 television network could be in for a big editorial shift soon as they plot to move the network away from "geek" oriented programming.

Anybody who watches the network regularly knows that they have already undergone a more subtle transformation over the past five years, transitioning away from gamer-specific shows to more mass-market fare like Cops and Ninja Warrior.

The next transformation is said to be to a more "upscale" style, catering to the modern man. The best comparison we've heard so far is that it may be a more "GQ"-style, referencing the popular upscale men's lifestyle magazine.

As of right now this is just a rumor as reported by Variety.

i used to leave my channel on G4 all day every day, then one day the channel disappeared >.< sure, the movies were dumb, but i enjoyed watching cops and xplay. and ninja warrior?! love that show!

    this is news?
  • Sy87 - September 9, 2012 1:32 p.m.

Well they got rid of the good shows a long few years back, and once Adam and Kevin left the last two shows gone down. Plus they don't do all the crazy skits they did back in the day. The feeling was lost long time ago. Oh well....

I dont even get this channel, but I have watched it at other peoples houses before. I like Cops, but always thought it was out of place on G4...

As long as X-Play (although it's getting worst w/o AS, can't stand Blair), AOTS (same, getting worst w/o KP), Anime, and Convention Coverage stays intact I don't really mind. The rest is just filler on the channel. It's not the best channel in the world but it's still 1000 better than crap like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo which it seems like many of you people watch judging by your comments. In the end, doesn't really matter, I would probably just play video games in it's absence.

Cops Cops Cops Cops Cops Cops Campus PD Campus PD Campus PD Campus PD Ninja Warrior (Entertaining) Ninja Warrior (Entertaining) Cops Cops X-Play Attack of the Show (Without Kevin Pereira) X-Play rerun Cops Cops Campus PD Campus PD "Movies That Don't Suck" (Ironically named, since they only show the worst movies ever.) This channel just needs to die.

I second the motion. No idea what ninja warrior is, I like to think I'm better for it.
  • IamTheBalance - September 8, 2012 12:01 p.m.

You would think that they would learn their lesson when the first "changes" happened because their ratings fell so far Directv dropped the channel. Now they are just kicking something thats already dead.

The only reason to watch any of their shows is to catch a glimpse of Sara Underwood, that's it. At least they are playing some movies now and then, but turning it into a men's lifestyle channel is going to backfire big time. There's a reason two of their main hosts have left in the past year, they can see the ship sinking.

Put it out of its misery already.

G4 lost its flavor. It used to have tons of video gaming shows, with occasional tech stuff. Then X-Play stopped being informative, delivering info slower than a turtle running across the desert. Now it's all reruns of stuff we can easily find on other networks, which is complete bullshit.

Ever since Adam Sessler left, I stopped paying attention to that "gaming news" sight. A lot of their "gaming specific" programs seemed juvenile at best, seemingly trying to make that young intermediate schooler laugh his head off. Nothing appealed to "mature gamers" (read as: most gamers), and it was an embarrassment to know that that was one direction a respectable news site for such a popular medium was going. To put it simply: good. Maybe we'll have a better video series... maybe even something good ol' GamesRadar could get behind.

Hey, it worked for SyFy. (Yes this is sarcasm)
  • TheCakeIsaPie - September 8, 2012 3:13 p.m.

    And MTV....
  • J-spit - September 8, 2012 7:24 a.m.

Subtle my c**k. This channel has been sh*t and I'm happy Adam Sessler had the foresight to leave when he did.

G4TV hasn't been relavent in years anyway. I can go on youtube and find a video of the same quality discussing the same topic(actually being discussed with far more enthusiasm on the youtube video might I add), and not only will the youtube video be released before G4TV's airs, I can watch it whenever the hell I want.

You know what was the only relevant thing of Modern G4 that was memorable? E3 2011, That Dreamcast 2 guy who butted in randomly.

This network has only gone downhill since it changed from TechTV. I stuck with it for a long time but I couldn't care less about Cops and American Ninja. Once Adam Sessler left I totally lost interest. It was never a "great" network but when it was TechTV it had a variety of programs that interested me. "The Screensavers", "Call for Help", "Extended Play", "Cinematech", and several others were shows that appealed directly to me. I continue to question how much "Geek" and "Nerd Culture" have really become mainstream, like many people claim, when programming that appeals to Geeks and Nerds gets pushed aside for more popular fair on a regular basis.

In the interest of, well, educating you, you sorta have your facts wrong, or are presenting them wrong. G4 never was TechTV. They used to be completely separate networks. Comcast started driving TechTV into the ground by dropping them from their network cuz they owned G4. Once TTV lost ratings and viewership (cuz, duh, Comcast), G4's parent company was able to buy TTV. They soon merged. And just a few weeks after they merged, G4 started laying off everyone in SF and Leo Laporte left "after a contract dispute" (sound familiar?). *ALL* of those shows you mention G4 cancelled because they didn't fit into G4's lineup, wtfever that is. And Screensavers became AOTS, cuz, well, the suits at G4 think that gamers and nerds prefer bimbo playmates over Leo Laporte and fluff over content. There may be SOME truth to that, but we can get that crap anywhere. We can't get Leo Laporte and ACTUAL geekism just anywhere on TV.
