First Tomb Raider trailer destroys something beautiful... Lara Croft

After that sexy, sexy desk that teased us so much last week, Square-Enix has finally gone and released the full trailer for the new Tomb Raider reboot. Yes, there's even more sultry desk action to please its swelling legion of fans, but it's also rather splendid everywhere else too. Not least the new Lara Croft, who looks positively beautiful... at least before banging her head, drowning a bit, slipping into a shipwreck-in-progress and getting washed up looking like something out of a Saw movie.

So what have we learned? Several things. Firstly, the new Lara looks amazing. This may only be CG, but we're more than a tiny bit in love. If Crystal Dynamics can carry across this level of personality into the game, we'll be mighty impressed.

Above: The eyes are still clearly Lara Croft, but her softer (initial) look is a pretty major step forward

Secondly, the lingering emphasis on the word 'Survivor' as Lara says she knows what she must become would suggest that the new game is going to be as much about staying alive as it is about raiding tombs. We're sure there will be some tombs in it seeing as that's the name of the game, but a constant struggle against the local fauna looks likely.

Above: Erm... where did that bow come from? Up until the accident, 'Claire's Accessories' looked most likely

Thirdly, things are a bit strange. There are several ships washed up alongside Lara's vessel, but two of them are proper sailing ships. Y'know, Spanish galleon style. Stranger still, their rigging still looks pretty new, not at all like they've been sat at the bottom of the ocean for centuries. Chuck in a crashed plane too and you've got yourself a mystery.

Finally, that desk is still awesome. It had better make an appearance in real-time gameplay, or at least DLC. Imagine if it became available in PlayStation Home, or as an item for your Xbox Avatar to sit at. Mmmmm... desky.

This seems less like a trailer for tomb raider and more like the intro to Minecraft
  • OD-Apache - June 5, 2011 4:14 a.m.

Bermuda Triangle? Several ship wrecks and planes...I haven't heard much about this, so I really wouldn't know.

I hope this doesn't flop. Uncharted + Tomb raider crossover! A man can dream...

" The eyes are still clearly Lara Croft, but her softer (initial) look is a pretty major step forward" Or a step backwards if i may say... The young Lara is definitely gorgeous... Oh and the looks like it's going to be great to...

Wow...I'm actually interested in this game now thanks to this trailer. This might just be the first Tombraider game I'll play in a decade.
  • Spybreak8 - June 4, 2011 7:29 a.m.

I liked the trailer but god this just reeks Square Enix.
  • Chaoscoolperson - June 3, 2011 11:18 p.m.

I think Ill buy this game. If so it will be the first tomb raider game ive ever played
  • Lizard2011 - June 3, 2011 11:16 p.m.

    Can´t wait, can´t wait, can´t wait...

This trailer made me suddenly very excited for this game. I hope that they really play up the survivalist aspect of it, and use it to explain how Lara first began to get her real skills (outside of maybe some gymnastics class as a kid). I'm hoping this feels like the movie Cast Away, with a bit of super natural. Kind of like Lost, but more traditional.

firstly, this looks AMAZING. I've never really played any of the games but with this coming out soon and the HD version of the older ones out, I'm going to go through all of them. now on the the bigger question. if this is a reboot, indicating that this is in fact the origins of Lara Croft, does this also mean that in the future of the story at some point in time she will get a breast implant? if so, why? I would imagine larger breasts would only get in the way when one is raiding tombs. but all jokes aside, this really looks promising.

So Drake's got a wrecked plane to his name, and now Lara's gone and ruined a boat. Wrecking large vehicles must be the new "in" thing among adventurer types these days.
  • Kingsman - June 3, 2011 4:39 p.m.

I want to like this...never been a fan of Tomb Raider...never even finished any of the games...but this could be special. I'm really into the whole 'survival' narrative, so if this means what I think it means, I'll happily get it. Recaptcha: 'Which Accente' ...British...duh.
  • Cleanser247 - June 3, 2011 4:07 p.m.

She may look pretty banged up after she get's shipwrecked, but hell, at least she can take the pain and move on. In my opinion, she's a beautiful badass! I can't wait for this to come out!
  • metroid2099400 - June 3, 2011 3:34 p.m.

Hmm... I'm intrigued, but perhaps I'll wait to preorder until I see her raiding a couple of tombs.
  • runner - June 3, 2011 3:10 p.m.

It's just me? Or the direction of the trailer is quite over dramatic like... you know, Square's style over dramatic like what you see in recent Final Fantasy and it's spin-off. This makes me quite worry...
  • reson8er - June 3, 2011 2:49 p.m.

Until I see gameplay, I just can't get excited. CG trailers used to be awesome, but now I just want to see what the game is like.
  • Rurik - June 3, 2011 1:57 p.m.

Lara doesn't look like herself in this. And this shows no gameplay footage whatsoever, but let's wait and see.
  • jackthemenace - June 3, 2011 1:57 p.m.

This total rehaul disturbs me. The fact that it DOESN'T have Lara Croft in the name also intrigues me, as well as it having "tomb Raider' in it, despite not looking very tomb-y at all. Oh, and HER BOOBS...! They're... IN PROPORTION TO THE REST OF HER BODY...!!!!
  • CitizenWolfie - June 3, 2011 1:44 p.m.

You can tell Square Enix have gotten their hands on her - stick a red bow in her hair and she's Aerith from FF7. Looks great though. My guess is all the shipwrecks and planes are down to some Bermuda Triangle-type twist.
  • rabidpotatochip - June 3, 2011 1:31 p.m.

I'm generally excited for this game but those shots reminded me of an article about Hollywood's overuse of teal and orange: Ah hell, I'd buy it anyway... I've loved Lara Croft since the beginning.
