Bethesda's got some 'splaining to do about why we should be excited for another fantasy MMORPG, but its new 9-minute-and-change gameplay reel is a good argument for The Elder Scrolls Online. The video gives a fairly detailed look at the game's controls, character customization, exploration, and realm vs. realm combat.
Lead gameplay designer Nick Konkle explains the game's controls and combat around the 2:20 mark. "This is an Elder Scrolls combat system," he says. Moving the mouse controls where you look and aims your weapon, left click delivers an attack and a longer press gives it some extra power, and right click blocks. Characters can sprint, crouch, and sneak as expected.
Game director Matt Firor also reveals that the game will not have individual servers, instead putting all players on one "megaserver" with broken-out game spaces, much like EVE Online. The title has set classes unlike other Elder Scrolls games, but Bethesda promises varying play styles based on flexible equipment choices.
Will The Elder Scrolls Online require subscriptions or be free-to-play? Will Bethesda be able to satisfy fans of Skyrim, Oblivion, and Morrowind? Is the era of traditional fantasy MMORPGs over? It's tough to say, but as long as we keep getting substantial reveals like these, our interest is officially maintained.
