    This is pretty cool but I can't help but think that this has got something to do with their new partnership with Microsoft :/

    Absolutely it does. This tells me [as a software engineer] that EA is maintaining a separate set of servers for the Pass stuff, and with MS handling it for them next gen they see the chance to get rid of the expense for something that isn't cost effective to keep running.

    What I want to know is whether PS4 will pursue something similar to what XBone's doing. If they do, I won't bother with them either.

    I don't think they would pass up the opportunity to start with more goodwill than microsoft. In countries like NZ, where internet is limited by monthly data caps and is extremely expensive, a console that is fully capable of functioning offline is much more viable.
