E3 2011: Watch the Zelda HD tech demo for Wii U and cry happiness from your eyes

This needs to stop being a demo and start being a game

One of the disappointments of Nintendo's E3 conference was the lack of Nintendo games revealed for its new Wii U console. It was great to see that the new machine will be getting games like Assassin's Creed, Darksiders II, Arkham City, Ghost Recon etc. But it would have been nice to have *something* Nintendo to get us all proper frothy at the mouth. What Nintendo does have at the show, however, is a Zelda HD tech demo. And it's pure beautiful. Focus your eyes upon it via the medium of shaky-cam footage:

Imagine. Actually playing it. Then imagine how incredible Tingle's body suit will look in HD. Can't wait for this to stop being a demo and start being a game.

    Why is he right handed?!?!

It's cool man I didn't misunderstand you, Twilight Princess is a Game Cube game :)

"that realistic link showed up in Twilight Princess..." GrumpyDinosaur, you are absolutely right. The thing is that, I meant that this never showed up on the Game Cube, which is what the original demo was for. But, there was no reason for you to know that is what I meant. So, I definitely worded that part wrong in my comment, and that was the misleading part. My bad.

I think it's important to mention that this is real-time footage, not pre-rendered.

So Nintendo show this and then say that this is just a demo and there is no new Zelda game in development and then announce a new Super Smash Bros for 3DS and WiiU that hasn't actually been started at all?! Way to blue balls Nintendo!

Fucking stunning. I'm just sad because they probably won't release whatever entry that is until like two years after the Wii U launches.

I don't see why everyone is so meh about this. Honestly, it looks better than anything else I have seen. I was absolutely positive this was a cgi tech demo when I saw it on the Wiiu trailer. If that's actual gameplay, then that's amazing. Sure, the actual graphics are only s small step up, but still a step up. (And honestly, we don't need a huge jump, or game devs are gonna be screwed) However, the animations look far superior to anything I've seen outside of CGI. Also, I love Zelda and I love Nintendo. They're the only ones who know how to make fantastic non-M games. They're like the Disney of video games. =]

basically this is Nintendo saying this is what you could of had, lol if we are lucky we might see this in 6 years once we have stopped caring!

How can anyone in their right mind be excited for skyward sword after seeing that tech demo. Me want HD Zelda NOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
  • wingsdjy - June 8, 2011 1:10 p.m.

So...will Skyward Sword be Wii only, Wii + Wii U, or Wii U only? Seems like Nintendo could morph it into something like this tech demo for launch.

@jmcgrotty that realistic link showed up in Twilight Princess...
  • db1331 - June 8, 2011 12:13 p.m.

They had better make this into a full game. I've been a Zelda fan since the original game. I've been waiting for something exactly like this for a looooooooooong time.

As much as I love the Zelda series, I've just realised that practically every single boss in the series suffers from ONE Major weakness: Gigantic eyeballs placed at critical locations on their body. I mean, what happened to all that darwinian crap that Christians try so hard to prove wrong?
  • shawksta - June 8, 2011 11 a.m.

@kit07 I have to disagree, this looks much more impressive than that of Standard 360/PS3 visuals. These visuals look awesome and show that Nintendo's up to standing up a notch!
  • veryweirdguy - June 8, 2011 10:59 a.m.

Look beautiful. But my favourite thing about this article is how it's apparently posted in "Batman: Arkham City" news. Is there a crossover we don't know about?
  • Poffle - June 8, 2011 10:50 a.m.

Tingle will indeed look amazing. I'm betting you will actually be able to see the outline of his penis through the body suit.

"Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me."
  • jmcgrotty - June 8, 2011 10:37 a.m.

Whoops! Sorry for double-post. Just realized something after sending. After someone said something, I realized that this is not a real game, but just (as even I said before) a tech demo. Sort of shoots holes in my observation of the purpose of the buttons (the "reverse day and night" especially). In a demo situation, it is just as plausible that the "reverse day and night" function was just to demo lighting effects the system can do. That also makes me leery now. The industry is littered with tech demos that just ended up not actually showcasing accurately what could be done. Zelda itself is guilty of this, when the Game Cube was introduced and "realistic Link" was shown. Never saw that again.
