E3 2011: Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City gameplay. Beautiful chaos, or just a mess?

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City has been met with some trepidation by fans of the survival horror. Not only is it a departure from the survival horror experience (it's a team-based shooter), it also takes liberties with the series' plot, even offering you the chance to off Leon Kennedy, star of Resident Evils 2 and 4. But none of that will matter so much if the game plays like a beauty. So here it is in action. Is it too frantic for a Resi game?

Arguably the best thing about Left 4 Dead (aside from the superlative co-op gameplay) is the sheer volume of zombie death when you get into a crowd of enemies. But that's been done - so surely a Resident Evil game should be more about the sense of menace? Not here. By the time you've emptied a clip and are halfway through reading the on-screen information about bleeding, it's all over and you're left staring at an undead riot that's way out of control.

Still, the 'you are dead' screen is nice and authentic, making the sober news that much more easy to swallow. Check it out in this video taken on the showfloor at E3:

 

 

Then there's this video showing the character selection process and the choice of weaponry on offer. Clearly, more will be unlocked as you play to fill in the padlocked spaces. The bios on the characters look interesting too, showing that the game at least has a sense of humour:

And the final video gives us a little more gameplay to ogle. There's only a zombie barf/sneeze/both and a little shooting, so there's a little more time to examine the city environment.

 

 

Impressions? Looks frantic from here and while the larger enemies seem to be able to absorb loads of bullets without dying, the weapons look to have a good feeling of kick when you fill a regular zombie with bullets. It looks pretty too, with loads of smooth movement, sexy shadow effects and reflections in the blood-slicked streets of Raccoon City. Also, the suitably apocalyptic current-gen realisation of that classic setting is exciting. We're still not convinced it's worthy of the Resident Evil name, especially with the no-show of Resi 6 at E3 (so far), but it looks better than some of the other spin-offs we've seen over the years.     ^^ Well it's on GR's Xbox and PS3 pages, and Ninty will probably want it for Wii U too. I'm not a fan of RE, but I like team based shooters. If this is how it will play then I predict that it won't be a hit with either RE or shooter fans. Too many IP's are being milked by pushing them in new and unwanted directions.

    capcom has always done a horrible job overabusing names/characters. This being called a resident evil isn't really that farfetched nowadays. RE4 is a great game but was pretty much all action shooter (which was fine for a reboot). Rail shooters and sillyness on the wii have pretty much lowered the standard for calling a game under the title of "Resident Evil". Classic Capcom overuse, throwing out Megaman 10 after MM9 had succeeded. Overuse of IPs and naming.

    This doesn't look good to me. I don't see how this is going to do anything better than what L4D did/does. Also like you said, holy hell did that hunter take a ton of bullets. It looks like it would be impossible to kill one by yourself, which I'm sure is the idea.

    Looks like a slightly more controlled version of L4D... which is exactly what I wanted out of L4D in the first place. For all intents and purposes tha game might as well have been Space Invaders. It was just an arcade coin-op with big flashy icons and 4 players. Slow it down a little and you've got more tactics on hand, closer to a more "authentic" zombie outbreak if you ask me.

    A guy on a forum I post on has just returned from E3 and had some hands-on time with this game, sharing his post: "RE: Operation Raccoon City- Alright, this is probably the best game that I played at E3 today. I just had so much fun with this game. They had 4 screens lined up and you played 4 player co-op, which is always awesome. The game plays like a tactical Gears of War, like Gears mixed with a bit of traditional RE. That makes for one hell of a fun game. You pick a character class and can customize their weapon and special ability to fit your playstyle. The game is really focused on teamwork and has a good mix of everything, action, horror, etc. Can't wait for this one."

    Lionzest7: "RE4 is a great game but was pretty much all action shooter..." I assume you mean Resident Evil 5, right? Otherwise... well I'm not exactly sure your opinion on RE games is that up-to-snuff. Honestly I cannot wait for this game, I love Capcom and Resident Evil and this is certainly a different style game, at least the 4 player co-op format, from their usual zombie games.

    I was pleasantly surprised by this vid. It looked slick, smooth, pretty and - dare I say - fun? I have to admit, when the game was first announced I was in the whole 'it's not Resi/we already have L4D' boat but let's face it, the L4D games (fun though they still are) have been knocking around for a while now and Resi has always been changing and morphing with every game. I mean how far removed was RE5 from the original that I played on release on the PS1? So long as it's a good game, I'll buy it. Always love a good zombie apocalypse, after all. Fighting a Tyrant or Nemesis would make a welcome change from a Tank! :D

    I really like the classes we're shown so far. If surveillance and recon are both different classes then that must mean that the roles of each class are very distinct and they don't all just blend together with minor differences like some other shooters. I'm really excited to see how this turns out!
