E3 2011: New Super Smash Bros. game announced for 3DS and Wii U

Though it was only mentioned in passing, Nintendo has announced a new Super Smash Bros. game for both Wii U and the 3DS. Interstingly, the game will include multiplayer connectivity between both systems. The game development is being overseen by series veteran Masahiro Sakurai of HAL who's currently working on the 3DS game Kid Icarus: Uprising.

Above: Official first screen! Or not. Defintely not.

Given both systems' wireless capabilites, inter system play makes a ton of sense, though we wonder if people playing on the 3DS can just look at the TV screen the Wii U is streaming to. Will the 3DS be able to function as an additional controller in this sense? In the interest of fairness gameply will likely be identical on the two systems, though the Wii U user will obviously have some nicer graphics.

One of the only potential downsides we're seeing is that Nintendo offered a lot of control options for Super Smash Bros. Brawl including GameCube controller support for players looking for more traditional/precise controls. We know the Wii U has backwards support for Wii accessories, and hopefully that includes the Classic Controller. The 3DS seesm a little more limited in external control options, though the touch screens seems likely to be incorporated in some way. We can already see the new hardcore players making rules: No items, No touch screen, Final Destination.

What was that Sakurai? Not working on a new Smash Bros again? This is good news for me. If anything the thought of a portable Smash has me giggling.

I've played Smash with a GameCube controller for ten years. This will be weird.

Smash Bros will always be with me, it's freakin bonded to my skin (ironically I've only played the n64 v) lol. Good to see I'm not the only one, this is awesome news!

Everyone is so petrified of letting go of the GCN controller. It's embarrassing.

Interadasting...if they go through with this,I expect to see Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes as a playable character...hes best suited for it to be honest I even have an idea for what his Final Smash could be...summoning the Glastonbury much like Fox/Falco/Wolf summon their tanks! And like how Yoshi can fly for his,you would be able to make the Glastonbury fly and strike with the Beam Katana

That little sentence of just "Oh yeah were making new smash bros." Got me more excited than anything else. the Wii U looks freakin ridiculous IDC what anybody says, a screen on the remote? Might as well just play your 3Ds (which will be amazing once these games actually come out)

I'm guessing they'd be like those multi-platform games, meaning there are two different versions, one for each platform with an inter-platform multiplayer mode.

If the game is identical on both systems they should release a box set with both games, oh and maybe 3D verisons of the old ones.

This sounds interesting I revised my opinion on this thing, all they need to do is change the name and possibly the design... also first
