Doom 3 BFG Edition release date announced

Today, Bethesda announced that they've scheduled the awesome-looking Doom 3 BFG Edition for release this fall on October 16, 2012.

The BFG Edition will feature "remastered" versions of both Doom 3 and its DLC pack "Resurrection of Evil," both of which will feature enahnced visuals as well as an armor-mounted flashlight that hopefully will extinguish all Doom 3 duct-tape jokes forever.

It will also feature Doom, Doom 2, and perhaps the star of the show, "The Lost Mission," a series of seven new levels that have been optimized for 3D as well as 5.1 audio.

The BFG Edition will be retailing for $29.99 on PC and $39.99 on PS3 and Xbox 360. The announcement trailer for the collection can be seen below.

Was the whole "no flashlight and gun at same time" thing really such a big deal? I played Doom 3 for the frist time last December, and I personally thought that was a neat touch and added to the suspense. And yes, day one purchase for me.

    THANK YOU GOD!

I just played this a few months ago on PC and I think the graphics still hold up very well, considering it is 8 years old. Not that I'm complaining about updated visuals.

I played this game by myself in the dark over many nights. Each night I would say the same thing, "Why the hell am I playing this game by myself in the middle of the night?"

Agreed! I was actually bummed when I read that the flashlight would be built into your armor. A lot of people missed the point that it was a tension-building game mechanic - clearly Bethesda included. Sure, an arguement could be made that it wasn't realistic that a roll of duct tape couldn't be found in such an expansive Mars base, but was it at all realistic that an invading army of other-dimensional hell beasts would take to hiding in closets until the moment you passed in front of them? I also recall more than a few levels that played up the whole "flashlight or gun but not both at once" mechanic - one in particular being an escort mission in near total darkness. That level was unforgettable as a result - I expect having a light on throughout with gun drawn would ruin everything that made it special. Again, and in a word, BOO! It would be nice if it this new "fix" (ugh - even calling it that irks me) were an optional feature, allowing us purists to play it as it was intended. As it stands it's kind of a deal breaker for me. And didn't Doom 3 go open source not that long ago? Would that mean that Bethesda grabbed what is now free, upped the texture quality and is now selling it (with a decent helping of attractive goodies admittedly)? Sort of like a residential "flip", except if the property were free to begin with? Kinda bullshit, although $30 for the PC version seems reasonable considering all the extras - if just barely. $40 for consoles seems to be pushing it. Lastly, was Doom 3 on anyone's "old games that could use a graphical overhaul" list anyway? I imagine the original still looks good today (particularly on a PC, recalling how the highest graphic options couldn't even be reached when it was first released - it was basically Crysis more than Crysis in that regard). Although I guess if there's an old game out there that could benefit greatly from the 3D treatment, Doom 3 is high on the list. But ultimately I think the whole "light and gun" revamp kills it. Perhaps it can simply be ignored in favor of original gameplay?

Of course it was an intentional mechanic, I don't think it makes much sense when people complain about it. Also, even though the pace was different, all of the enemies but zombie marines had patterns where you could dodge their attacks. If you spot an imp, you have plenty of time to get out your shotgun, because the audio and visual cues that they're throwing a fireball are so distinct. And the original Doom 3 didn't have many resolution options, it didn't even support 16:9 and was never updated to do so. So that could definitely use an overhaul.

Also, you can actually kill the guy you're escorting and it will cause less enemies to show up.

....so can I still use my Hello Kitty flashlight mod or what? Armor mounted flashlights are for pansies. Sprinting away in pitch black when that orange light flashes on screen is how the game was meant to be played. (admittedly I did cave for the flashlight mounted shotgun when overwhelmed). If this version supports the old mods I will gladly purchase it, otherwise there is just too much stuff freely available to enhance the original to justify a repurchase.

Is this on a disk or is it a downloadable game?

Never played this one, either, so this will finally give me a chance to check it out. Pretty excited!

Cool, I didn't know about this. I've never played Doom 3, so I'll have to check out this version.

I'm down for this. My PC couldn't handle it the first time around and i decided to go for consoles this gen. The extra content seems worth 40 bucks but i already have doom and doom 2 from xbla...
