BioWare's next project gets frustratingly short, 5-second teaser

A miniscule sneak peak at Bioware's next big project has hit the interwebs, teasing gamers with a few odd seconds of what can at least be described as... "not Mass Effect 3, right?"

There's not much to work with in the promo, but the full reveal is said to take place during Spike TV's Video Game Awards on December 11th, where it will be joined by a special presentation of Batman Arkham City. This leaves the gaming community about three weeks to do what it does best – speculate!

So what's your guess: An action-RPG war game? A Silent Scope reboot? A super-futuristic Dragon Age? Whatever it is, initial impressions are fairly... generic. Granted, BioWare's record is nearly spotless, so here's hoping it doesn't squander its talents on a Tom Clancy clone.

See? Speculation – all the cool kids are doing it! And there's more: BioWare has continued to drop hints on Twitter.

I think it's a new shattered steel, considering what those weird, pixilated messages on twitter say when scanned.

Huh, I think this is now the second or third year that Spike's VGAs have been on my birthday. I shall have to remember to watch their joke of an award show while I'm sitting on my ass enjoying my day off. 'Cause, you know, new Bioware game reveal and whatnot.

I think Bioware saw Alpha Protocal and said we can do this better. I hope it is a modern day war RPG. That would be cool.

I could have swore that I read somewhere that Bioware was going to make a game set in the Mass Effect universe that wasn't ME3.

@Brutalicus As the 1 person who downloaded pinnacle station at the very end you get to fight in a simulation from the first contact war. It was a pain in the ass to unlock but it is there. I'm down for a little retcon if it means an expansion pack

We all know BioWare is the best thing to ever exist on the planet so it really doesn't matter what it is. However Im pretty sure it will end up being ME3 since they are already working on two other titles right now... I don't see them introducing a new series (or a prequel) with so much going on right now.

It could be ME3, you never know. There's a pretty good thread I read on some forum (I don't remember which site) where they were trying to fulfill their own desire to not see the main ME trilogy "ruined" by another superior "shooter" like ME2, so they were hoping this would be a prequel. Pretty much the only real solid info was a comparison of the gun to the Incisor sniper rifle (just Google it) and the translation of the two QR codes. The tone was pretty bad so I stopped reading since I think ME2 is the best game ever made (literally) and the gameplay changes from RPG to shooter contributed heavily. Personally, I'm hoping its ME3. I'll be buying it either way.

@ Doctalen We only have a brief description of the Battle of Shanxi. Ash talked about how the turians bombed the hell out of it but that doesn't exclude the possibility of ground engagements.

Interesting! I wonder what it's going to be about?? Well, I guess we'll find out on the VGA's, or a leak!
  • Doctalen - November 17, 2010 9:54 p.m.

Damn, wish I didn't read these comments. A prequel about the First-Contact War would be amazing. If it is a First Contact War game, how does the planet side combat fit in? I thought the majority of the War was a space naval battle becuase of the few losses. Sure there are some ground conflicts, it didn't last long enough for too many major ground operations. From what I can tell, the majority of the war was spent building up fleets to take back Shanxi.
  • Brutalicus - November 17, 2010 9:03 p.m.

I could totally see the First Contact War being portrayed in a military shooter (although they could just do a spinoff with ME2 gameplay and new PCs). There were two major battles in the war, and around 600 casualties for both sides. So there weren't ships splattering against each other left and right like the Citadel battle, but there's probably enough to make a standalone game out of.
  • SideOfBeef - November 17, 2010 8:52 p.m.

Assuming it's Mass Effect, which I'm almost certain it is, and the Earth-like/less-futurey character environment, I'm guessing its a spin-off following humanity's first contact with aliens, and the human-turian war. Nerding out so hard.

@P0LARCLAW Your KOTOR3 is the Old Republic MMO coming out next year. They say u can play it as a singleplayer game or a MMO,so i guess that answers your question.
  • shadowreaper72 - November 17, 2010 8:22 p.m.

I think it may be that military shooter that Bioware said they were interested to make.
  • Brutalicus - November 17, 2010 8:19 p.m.

Want to know! Mass Effect universe, in my opinion. Apparently Bioware's twitter feeds have linked to two QR codes that translate to 1) the atomic mass of iron (Fe) and 2) the coldest recorded Earth temperature in Vostok, Antarctica. It's not an ARG without a good bit of random speculation!
