Bad habit

  • avantguardian - December 2, 2012 11:01 p.m.

in games, smashing everything in the environment is as natural as running to the right.
  • avantguardian - December 2, 2012 11:18 p.m.

oh, and hating on achievements/trophies is just flawed reasoning. regardless of how one may subjectively view their value, the fact is that they mean something to some people. such is the essence of 'value'. you could tell me that they're pointless, and, using your own logic, i could say the same thing about gaming in general. (should be noted that i appreciate cheevos/trophies, but won't waste my time with the shitty ones.)
  • xx_CaPTiiN_SpAiiN_zz - December 3, 2012 9:21 a.m.

no because you would have to justify that assertion with logic as to why gaming is pointless... i mean fair enough about enjoying them subjectively but we could use subjectivity to justify anything even murder which isnt very useful so and we should base how much value gaming and achievemenets have on the same criteria and rationality. for eg we know that people like to play games for a variety of different reasons and achievements are not very consistent with that reasoning.
  • avantguardian - December 3, 2012 12:19 p.m.

sorry dude, but you're not even in the same ballpark comparing the subjectivity of games to murder. murder breaks the number one rule: it violates the rights of another, and removes one's freedom to think/act for themselves. so no, you can't use subjectivity to justify anything, and frankly, it's kind of fucked up that you'd think so. it's not my place to judge one that has committed murder, but i can tell you that i think it's WRONG. and not even remotely comparable. i can easily argue that games are as much (if not more of) a waste of time than achievements. anyone can. it's an opinion. your ideas of achievements and their value is irrelevant, unless, of course, you can tell me exactly why everyone likes them. which you can't. so...
  • xx_CaPTiiN_SpAiiN_zz - December 3, 2012 3:46 p.m.

more of a waste of time than achievements... sorry but i dont think you can argue that at all and all youve done is introduce a double standard for subjectivity... people who have burglars break in sometimes think about thsi and many say that they would not kill the burglar and others say that they would and rememeber how many people follow the ten commandments etc... if you cant understand that subjectivity is all encompassing then i suggest you look it up
  • avantguardian - December 3, 2012 11:11 p.m.

again, sorry, but your post is just all sorts of wrong, and you completely contradict yourself with your first and last statements. but i think we're getting hung up on semantics, here. so, without getting overly metaphysical, i'll just explain what i mean. i DO NOT care if you choose to spend your time playing games, or knitting a sweater, or reading a book, or fapping to the interwebs, or chasing platinum trophies. because i can't tell YOU what is valuable, or how to spend your time/energy. i DO care if someone is using their right/ability to do what they want to infringe on the right of another to do the same. things like rape, slavery, murder. different discussions involving moral stances. trying to compare these with (or make a moral statement about )achievements is beyond absurd. is this so hard to understand?
  • xx_CaPTiiN_SpAiiN_zz - December 4, 2012 2:46 a.m.

i accept your apology and maybe i am not getting what i want to say across properly especially if you stay on the subject of comparing murder... i was talking about an aspect of it not the deed. maybe it is the language barrier so i am sorry for that as well
  • avantguardian - December 4, 2012 4:51 a.m.

it's all good...such is the internet:)
  • xx_CaPTiiN_SpAiiN_zz - December 3, 2012 2:31 a.m.

lol and STEAM achievements are even worse than gamerscore or the ps3 trophies as no one can even see them and compare or you dont get bonuses from them so it is a complete waste of time.
  • AuthorityFigure - December 3, 2012 3:47 a.m.

Hey! That's so true... How stupid.
  • xx_CaPTiiN_SpAiiN_zz - December 3, 2012 9:23 a.m.

yeah man its crazy XD so you dont even get bragging points for them
  • EAC73 - December 5, 2012 12:56 p.m.

umm yes you can see what achievements your friends got, just go the the community tab and it tells you the latest achievements they earned, and tf2 rewards class based achievements with weapons, and steam is always doing things like the winter sale last year, if you got certain achievements you can earn a free game at random or a coupon off a game, or their treasure hunt they did before that entered you into a raffle for each objective achievement you completed, to win your top 10 games on your wishlist. So steam achievements really aren't that bad and they do serve a purpose.
  • xx_CaPTiiN_SpAiiN_zz - December 6, 2012 12:27 a.m.

they serve as much of a purpose as atheism... annoying and pointless because nobody cares
  • kupo - June 1, 2014 8:47 p.m.

Fuck God and Jesus in the ass.
  • AuthorityFigure - December 3, 2012 3:53 a.m.

I've seen people constantly centering the camera in 3rd person games - it's like a monkey hitting the feeder button...
  • CitizenWolfie - December 3, 2012 4:07 a.m.

I totally do the quick save one. And the "Hit the Ground Running" one, especially once I've fallen into a losing streak as it gets even worse. By the time I realise I'm doing it, I'm on a 1/10 K/D and very close to rage quitting.
  • wolfyman1000 - December 3, 2012 6:11 a.m.

i find my self looking for things in games to like gta 4 a secret car weapon something lol.also to think about getting pissed off playing army of two 2 and someone is running getting shot and i had to go rescue them
  • patbateman17 - December 3, 2012 7:02 a.m.

I know I'm petty, but why do people say X a.m. in the morning? No shit, it's a.m. I know it's the morning. No one says x p.m. in the they? This always bugs me. /end rant/
  • Aetherguard - May 4, 2014 10:56 p.m.

    I 100% agree
  • ObliqueZombie - December 3, 2012 8:27 a.m.

Hahaha, great article. But I could argue achievements ARE worth something, both physically and metaphysically. I do see what you mean, though! ;)
  • Killingjoke - December 3, 2012 9:41 a.m.

Lol great article so many Im guilty of. I remember grinding and leveling up in FFIX that the last boss was a joke
  • Thedigitalg - December 4, 2012 1:06 a.m.

I would add 'Deliberately going the wrong way to find stuff'. I always find myself thinking, 'I should go left here to continue the narrative; let's go right and look for collectibles.'
