2011 Platinum Chalice Game of the Year nominees: Portal 2

This Friday, we kick off GamesRadar’s sixth officially annual Platinum Chalice awards, a celebration of the best of what the industry’s given us in 2011. In the run-up to the awards, we’re doing something a little different. Every day this week, we’ll reveal one of our five Game of the Year nominees, with brief videos detailing why we think they’re titles worthy of consideration. And after the Chalices are posted on Friday afternoon (Pacific time, that is), we’ll follow up with a special video detailing our winner. Let’s begin with a no-brainer: one of the year’s most critically acclaimed games, Portal 2.

Is Portal 2 your favorite game of the year? Whether you agree or disagree, let us know in the comments, and don’t forget to stay tuned all week for more Platinum Chalice nominees!

    Portal 2, no questions asked.

Portal 2 should win, no brains. It's the only true comedy I've seen in gaming, and that's not only because of Wheatley/Cave Johnson. Where the hell are you guys leaving Deus Ex?

I still don't get why portal 2 is so popular. Sure it was interesting and fun while it lasted, but so many people see it as like the second coming of God. I guess it's just not my kind of game.

I personally think that only the co-op component of Portal 2 deserves goty merit, which is only half the game. the single player is while great, excellent even, is a straight-up sequel material with no quantum leap whatsoever. on a side note, as someone else have quoted brilliantly, stephen merchant was only being stephen merchant IMO, my personal favorite is Cave Johnson

For me it's either this game or Arkham City, but I can't decide!

No surprise here. Definitely in my top 3 of 2011.

Portal 2 is a fantastic game, and certainly deserves game of the year in it's own right. With terrific voice acting, great jokes, difficult puzzles, and truly excellent co-op, it is a gem of a game. However, I believe that it is a hell of a difficult decision to decide "GOTY" over any other game, and so I'd have to say that one of my most played and most enjoyed games of the year is "The Elder Scroll's V: Skyrim". But here is a thought for Valve. If you want to have a shot at "GOTY" yet again, release the now something of a myth, "Half Life 3". And I know that many people are bitching about the subject, but just here me out. What if in the new installment, "Aperture Science" isn't just part of the overall universe, but their creations have become a very real threat. As the Protagonist Gordan Freeman, we're tasked with stopping the bad dudes again, but this time we have access to tools used in the "Portal" games, such as of course, the portal gun itself. I think that the portal gun works great for puzzles, but would make for quite interesting firefights, if implemented in the right way. Anyway, yeah, haha. Portal 2= Puzzle game "GOTY"

Portal 2 was awesome and was worth the wait to see Glados again, and dont get me started on Wheatly.

I predict the other nominees are Uncharted 3, skyrim, Zelda and Arkham city, however my personal nominees are portal 2, deus ex, uncharted 3, arkham city and skyrim.

Skyrim, Deus Ex, Batman Arkham City, Portal 2.
  • darkraichu34 - December 12, 2011 8:16 p.m.

Pokemon White (80 Hours the first week) and Arkham City are my choices. Although I haven't played Shadows of the Damned yet.

Everyone's entitled to his/her own opinion, of course, but I will never understand all the love Portal 2 gets. Okay, yes, the game had funny writing. Stephen Merchant did a great job being Stephen Merchant. Other than that, I felt the gameplay got boring and was stretched too thin, and the story felt shallow and tensionless. Some people love it, I realize, but I really don't get the appeal.

My top 5 are definitely (in no particular order) 1- Portal 2 2- Dead Island (no bugs in my game, challenging but not impossible for a bad gamer like me) 3- I guess MW3 (stop hatin', best campaign and most balanced multiplayer in the series) 4- Pokemon White 5- Minecraft 1.0 - Saints Row III, Skyward Sword and Skyrim would be on here if I played them

    I'm just going out on a limb and list these: - Battlefield 3 - Bastion - Portal 2 I don't own a console anymore...
  • Redeater - December 12, 2011 6:44 p.m.

Battlefield 3?? Take cover!!!!!! Before the COD fanboys and BF3 haters post!
  • gmcb2011 - December 12, 2011 10 p.m.

Just shut up...haven't you noticed the smoke has cleared?
  • Redeater - December 12, 2011 10:08 p.m.

Yes because nobody lets things go like rabid fanboys. If you seriously think the "smoke has cleared" I'll bet you think things are hunky dory in Iraq because you don't hear about it. Gamesradar just published "modern warfare 3 made 1 billion." Please check the comments if you think the smoke has cleared. Also, learn to take a fucking joke.
  • gmcb2011 - December 13, 2011 12:32 p.m.

Yet no one here started any sort of fanboy rage. I'm just irritated with people bringing up that stupid little fan war whenever ANYTHING related to those games is posted.
  • MrDuracraft - December 12, 2011 6:34 p.m.

Portal 2 is so my game of the year. It's just so great, I can't think of any problems and everything it did was done fantastically. Top 5 of the year for me are: Portal 2, Skyward Sword, Bulletstorm, Mario 3D Land, and a tie between Pokemon Black and Deus Ex
