2011 Platinum Chalice Game of the Year nominees: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

This Friday, we kick off GamesRadar’s sixth officially annual Platinum Chalice awards, a celebration of the best of what the industry’s given us in 2011. In the run-up to the awards, we’re doing something a little different. Every day this week, we’ll reveal one of our five Game of the Year nominees, with brief videos detailing why we think they’re titles worthy of consideration. And after the Chalices are posted on Friday afternoon (Pacific time, that is), we’ll follow up with a special video detailing our winner.

Yesterday we unveiled our first official nominee for our Game of the Year, and today we present another contender that should also come as no surprise – it's Zelda, after all. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword lives up to the impossible standards of the Zelda series, and for that it earns a right to compete for the top spot.

Is Skyward Sword your favorite game of the year? Whether you agree or disagree, let us know in the comments, and don’t forget to stay tuned all week for more Platinum Chalice nominees!

Is the Wii really dead already? How many great games did it end up with? Do you need even two hands to count them? It's too bad, the NES and SNES had so many greats (and what a surprise, many were Zelda games, presumably pretty similar to this one.) Too bad you need underpowered machines to support Nintendo, instead of them going multiplatform. Of course, Sega hasn't really produced so many greats since becoming software only producers.

Twlight Princess, Mario Galaxy 1, Mario Galaxy 2, Wario Ware Smooth Moves, Metroid Other M (not great but good), Metroid Prime 3, Skyward Sword, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Super Paper Mario, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Xenoblade Chronicles, Last Story (if xenoblade sells well enough), and the much better version of Okami. Now it wasn't as great as NES and Snes for it's time. But it wasn't a bad system, just a disappointment. And I love how you talk about how great the NES was, yet talk about how bad the graphics were. Newsflash, the NES was competing with the Sega Genesis. Now both were good systems, but was the NES inferior? Not really. The Snes was competing with the 32x and the atari Jaguar. You wanna tell me whats better of the three? Just because it's not omg HD, it doesn't mean that it's not fun. Uncharted is a 8 hour game, then it's done, but I spent more hours in Skyward Sword, then any game for PS3 or Xbox this year, logging in over 40 hours. And no the wii's not dead. Xenoblade and hopefully last story are still coming out for it.

I think I've spent way more time with Patapon 3 and Ghost Trick this year, but out of the GotY choices...I'd probably go with either this one or Portal 2...

This game was nothing but awesome and stands proudly next to the Best Zelda's, its story is one of the more touching, with Link and Zelda's relationship the strongest there ever was , and this game took risks on the series while still keeping it traditional. And dont get me started on its Unique Visuals. Naysayers who refuse to give Motion a chance wont understand, THIS is how you add Motion to a core Action Adventure game and I wouldnt have it any other way. The Puzzles and tactics to attack enemies were brilliant (especially that 3 headed dinosaur thing), and the gameplay elements were awesome. Motion Plus was a blessing and our original thoughts on motion in the past has finally been fullfilled and done Right with this game. I never have 1 GOTY, Because there are allot of awesome games. Skyward Sword is one of my Top games.
