Ninja Gaiden Sigma wasn't that tough, Black was harder, and I finished it on hard difficulty when I was like 6 or 7. I haven't played it since I lost the Black disc :v

I'm going in once more to challenge these games again!

Donkey Kong Country Return and Tropical Freeze, never have two games managed to so perfectly walk the tightrope of difficulty and enjoyment without ever falling off for the whole game

Ok, where is Dwarf Fortress? How can anyone, considering him / herself a video game journalist, write an article about punishing games and forgot Dwarf Fortress? What the hell?

Both recent Donkey Kong Country games were really hard and defiantly worth seeing to the end 100% complete! So was Mario Galaxies 1&2! I'll never forget the day me and my friend beat Grandmaster Galaxy, all I can say is it must be what winning an Olympic gold feels like.

I had Tropical Freeze in my original list! I decided to omit it in favor of keeping everything last-gen.

Binding of Isaac definitely deserves a spot on here somewhere

I'm totally calling my band Bananasaurus Rex and his miraculous solo Eggplant run. Brahms-er for short.

I've actually delved into almost half of the games mentioned here, and I certainly felt the joyous victories a number of times after a lot of crushing defeats...

Honestly, I was expecting Dragon Age to be on here. That game has more unfair/unexpected difficulty spikes than any other game I have played.

Am I the only one who thinks the difficulty is Dark Souls 2 is underwhelming so far? I haven't been using any walkthroughs or anything but I was surprised at how many healing Items they give you. Ninja Gaiden on Hard mode was MUCH more difficult than this game. This isn't a dick wagging post. I'm just finding this game way easier than some other games I've played. Regardless, I'm enjoying the freedom in it anyways.

Did you play the original games? Part of the challenge of the Souls franchise is learning to play by the game's rules. Veterans of the series have a much easier time adjusting to new adventures. With that being said, I will agree with you that the bosses are much, much easier thus far. Granted, I've only taken down 4, but 3 of the 4 were on my first attempt, and the 4th was on my second. Looking forward to seeing what tricks DS2 has up its sleeve later on. Man I love these games.

I briefly gave the first one a try I think. I might pick it up later if I have time. I've played a CRAP load of old school shooters and RPG's so maybe I'm having an easier time with it since my resource management is polished to perfection. I just don't understand why its supposed to be difficult since you have resp awning enemies and death carries no penalty in a world that is already populated with cheap health potions and those things that turn u back human. I'm cautious by nature in videogames so maybe that helps. I am really enjoying my time playing this though and that's all that matters.

I would say that it's not really that hard for you because you're playing it right. The "difficulty" is that it doesn't have a lot of the conveniences and helping hands from a lot of more recent games. Even when I'm dying, I'm still really progressing in the end. I've had some difficulties but those are mostly from trying to take down things I know I shouldn't be able to... because they're there and this is the path I want to take. Also I don't know if you've gone down the pit in Majula but... there's something down there that's giving me quite a bit of trouble.
  • Redeater - March 14, 2014 11:22 a.m.

Ugh, that fucking pit. "Gee, that pit looks rather deep....luckily, there is a cat to sell me a ring that reduces falling damage." *buys the ring, sticks the landing perfectly on the first wooden plank.....still fucking dies from falling damage.
  • Fujizzle - March 14, 2014 11:33 a.m.

If I remember properly, the sweet spot for survival is 17 vigor in human form with full HP and the Cat's ring.

Proud to say I have full gamerscore on Super Meat Boy. Cotton Alley shredded my thumbs!

    That is seriously impressive, sir.
