Xbox One will get two Games with Gold starting next month

Xbox Live Games with Gold is about to get twice as (potentially) enticing for Xbox One owners. Microsoft says it will offer two Xbox One games free every month to Xbox Live Gold subscribers starting in July, up from the standard one per month portioned out over the last year.

The first official month of Games With Gold was July 2013 (with Defense Grid: The Awakening and Assassin's Creed 2 for Xbox 360) and Microsoft says it's pumping up the promotion in honor of its two-year anniversary. A new, free Xbox One game will go up about every two weeks, and you'll have a full month to snag it before it goes offline.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will join Games with Gold starting on July 1, and puzzle-platformer So Many Me will arrive on July 16. Plants Vs. Zombies and Gears of War 3 will be free for Xbox 360 subscribers from July 1 to 15 and July 16 to 31, respectively - free Xbox 360 games will still only be available for two weeks each.

With Xbox One's free monthly selection doubling, Games With Gold now matches PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection's two-games-per-console-per-month output. But since Sony's program also covers PlayStation Vita on top of PS3 and PS4, and many of its selections are playable across platforms, Microsoft still has some catching up to do. That said, "more free games" is pretty much the best possible result of console competition.
