I got a BA in journalism from Central Michigan University - though the best education I received there was from CM Life, its student-run newspaper. Long before that, I started pursuing my degree in video games by bugging my older brother to let me play Zelda on the Super Nintendo. I've previously been a news intern for GameSpot, a news writer for CVG, and was formerly a staff writer at GamesRadar.

Doom's closed alpha test begins in just over 12 hours (12:01 am Eastern time), but you can already get a look at its most essential element: the guns. Id's released a new video showing off some of the fast-paced action players can expect from the alpha and - less officially - an alpha user grabbed screens of the weapon selection menu (via DSOG). Either way, we now have a much better idea of how new Doom's weapons will behave.
The alpha only has a limited selection of the full game's many instruments of mayhem so don't be too distressed by the lack of BFG9000. You can click through the gallery above to see old friends like the Super Shotgun and newcomers like the Static Cannon while we wait for a more complete look at the arsenal. I've also transcribed each item's tooltips for extra legibility; every gun has a standard fire and a unique "weapon modifier" which deserves special attention.
