Alongside a ton of other Nintendo news today, amiibo fanatics - myself included - got an important update on the popular toys. A whole new set of figures for Smash Bros. was announced, as was a series of amiibo tied to Mario Party 10. Last but not least, collectors got an important update on a very rare figure, and some other new features.
Firstly, the next set of Smash Bros. amiibo is coming in "spring." In the set are Lucina, Robin (male version), Wario, Ness, Pac-Man, and Charizard, which puts amiibo close to filling out the entire roster for Smash. But Nintendo isn't done, as a second new set of amiibo is coming March 20, and that group is based on the Mario series. New figures of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser are coming, as well the amiibo debut of Toad. They're arriving on the same day as Mario Party 10, the Wii U sequel that has an entire new mode dedicated to playing as amiibo. Mario Party 10 even comes with a special edition with the new Mario amiibo packed-in.
This morning's Nintendo Direct also had some smaller amiibo updates. Marth, the most sought after figure of US fans, will be getting a new run, so hopefully you won't need to pay $100 for him on eBay. Speaking of Fire Emblem characters, you'll be able to import any of the amiibo from that series as playable characters in the upcoming 3DS tactics game Code Name STEAM. Meanwhile, that new Toad amiibo unlocks a new mode in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker that sends players on a search for a hidden, pixelated Toad in every stage. Lastly, we found out a forthcoming update to Smash Bros. for 3DS will finally add amiibo functionality to that game as well.
If you want to see every game that uses amiibo, Nintendo has a helpful chart that should clear everything up for you. Here's hoping that all of these new toys remain easier to find than their earlier counterparts.
