“In real-life astronomy, dark energy is a fairly new concept that explains some strange new results that go against conventional physics theories. In Mass Effect, some characters have implants that allow them to harness that strange force and shape it into violent bursts of energy that can be used in combat. For example, a Biotics user can throw a gravity-like wave against a group of enemies to injure them and throw them high into the air, or can generate temporary whirlpools of dark energy which can be used as cover against enemy fire. Not every character will be able to use Biotics though - only those that have the required implants and have a rare ability to feel and shape this mysterious energy source.
“Regardless of your specialization, though, you’ll be able to equip a pistol, an assault rifle, a sniper rifle and a shotgun from the start. You’ll also have grenades, and you may also have the ability to fire tech probes and - as mentioned - Biotics. Throughout the game you’ll find Mods - small upgrades that give your equipment amazing effects. Weapons can be modded to set enemies on fire, and even grenades can be modded to have a bigger physical punch or to freeze enemies solid. And you’ll gain skills with these weapons that allow for impressive feats, like overloading your shotgun to release a huge ball of fire at the enemy, or releasing a dark energy effect called Singularity, which creates a tiny black hole near
