Get to grips with the cast of Sonic Superstars and some brand-new abilities

Sonic Superstars is out now, bringing everyone's favorite hedgehog and a whole bunch of old friends back for a new adventure. So whether you're a Sonic veteran or a newcomer to the series, here's a rundown of the characters you'll play as and the unique skills they can bring to bear.

First up is Sonic. He might be famously fast, but the hedgehog can't rely on speed alone to help him defeat Dr Eggman. Thankfully, his iconic spin-dash move returns, letting you breeze through obstacles and enemies without missing a stride. Next is Tails, Sonic's long-suffering best friend who puts his tail to work like helicopter blades, unlocking new paths as he soars through each zone, and even dispatching any foes that dare get too close.

Then there's Knuckles. The feisty echidna and Sonic's somewhat grouchy ally, is putting those titular fists to work in Sonic Superstars, climbing walls before gliding through the air and punching straight through the enemies in his path. Finally, Amy rounds out the roster, smashing through and leaping over obstacles with the help of a double-jump and her trusty hammer.

You can play as any of those characters right from the start of the game, either in solo or by teaming up with your friends in up to four player local or online co-op. And while each member of the Sonic Superstars gang has their own unique abilities, you'll also be able to change up the game thanks to Emerald Powers. Collect Chaos Emeralds to unlock new Powers, like Avatar, which calls forward a crowd of clones that rush across the screen to defeat enemies, or Slow, which slows down time to let you access those hard-to-reach spots more easily. In total, you'll be able to collect seven Emerald Powers, but you'll need to find them for yourselves to work out what each one does.

Sonic Superstars is available right now on PC and all major consoles, and if you fancy putting a blocky spin on the game, you can also grab LEGO skins and a whole LEGO-themed level via the Sonic Superstars LEGO Fun Pack DLC. With the whole gang working together in four-player co-op, and all those Emerald Powers at your fingertips, Dr Eggman doesn't stand a chance.
