The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask lead worries Link speaking in the movie will ruin the magic for some fans

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask art director Takaya Imamura says he's worried the magic of the series will be lost when Link speaks in the upcoming movie.

Over on Twitter, Imamura responds to a post asking about people's thoughts on the upcoming The Legend of Zelda movie now that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie – which Imamura won't be seeing until later this month when it releases in Japan – has been out for a few days.

The legendary ex-Nintendo dev says (via machine translation) that he's a little worried that some of what he describes as the magic of Zelda will be lost when Link speaks in the film (assuming he does). When asked by a fan how he thinks the film will handle Link speaking, Imamura reckons that he'll definitely be talking, but will generally be a quiet character throughout the runtime.

While it's not been outright stated that Link will speak in the film, in a Reddit AMA (thanks, Zelda Dungeon) back in 2024, The Legend of Zelda movie director Wes Ball was asked if he thinks Link should speak. He responded, "When I play Zelda as Link I speak with many villagers and creatures throughout the game; asking and answering many questions," and added shrugging emoticon, seemingly hinting that we'll be hearing Benjamin Evan Ainsworth speaking as Link in the film.

Of course, Ball has a point, Link does speak in most The Legend of Zelda games, it's just that we don't ever hear him or see what he's saying, but characters responding to something he's told them is a common thing during his adventures.

But Imamura is probably right that when it comes to how they handle it, I can absolutely see him being a quiet character in the film, and we very likely don't need to worry about Link saying anything like, "Gee, it sure is boring around here," "I just wonder what Ganon's up to," or "Excuuuuuuuuuuuuse me princess."
