The Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream demo has been out in the wild for about a couple of days now, having dropped seemingly out of the blue earlier this week – and, sadly, that means that many of us have concluded our time with it already.
After spending a good few fun hours just messing about with my three Miis, I unfortunately unlocked the dreaded clothing shop – the Where & Wear store.
If you're anything like me, you were probably thrilled to finally have access to new clothes for your Miis… only to find out that once you enter Where & Wear, your time with the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream demo is up, and you can no longer do, well, pretty much anything.
Newly issued statement about the recent Where and Wear epidemic from r/tomodachilife
I'm not the only one heartbroken to learn that, upon accessing Where & Wear, I can only minimally interact with my Miis inside their houses (and hear spiels about how the "retail version" will contain so and so that the demo doesn't).
Over on Reddit, folks have even gone as far as posting an amusing warning "about the recent Where & Wear epidemic" – a little reminder to "stay as far from Where & Wear as possible!!!"
There are even some memes floating about regarding how lifeless and advertise-y Miis (and the entire game, really) become after you buy clothes. "I'd be less offended if they just booted you out, saying 'demos over, no more demo, see you in April,'" one fan comments – and most fellow players (hi, it's me) seem to agree.
"Yes, dude, they word it like you can at least watch your Miis do stuff outside until the full game, but they just repeat ad lines in their houses."
Miis get lobotomized once you unlock the clothing store 💔 from r/tomodachilife
Elsewhere in a separate post, somebody echoes this sentiment, writing, "Miis get lobotomized once you unlock the clothing store." They say they "thought you would still be able to interact with them like usual, but just inside their houses." Instead, "all they talk about is how we need to play the retail version."
Yep, that checks out. As someone whose Miis have succumbed to the Where & Wear "lobotomization," I feel it.
Thankfully, there's not too long left to wait until the full Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream – the coveted "retail version" – releases on April 16. Until then, I suppose I'll just keep on browsing other players' mind-boggling Mii creations online.

After spending years with her head in various fantastical realms' clouds, Anna studied English Literature and then Medieval History at the University of Edinburgh, going on to specialize in narrative design and video game journalism as a writer. She has written for various publications since her postgraduate studies, including Dexerto, Fanbyte, GameSpot, IGN, PCGamesN, and more. When she's not frantically trying to form words into coherent sentences, she's probably daydreaming about becoming a fairy druid and befriending every animal or she's spending a thousand (more) hours traversing the Underdark in Baldur's Gate 3. If you spot her away from her PC, you'll always find Anna with a fantasy book, a handheld video game console of some sort, and a Tamagotchi or two on hand.
