Haven't heard of Gothic before? If you're an RPG fan, you need this on your wishlist now
Mark your calendars for June 5
A lengthy 25 years have passed since the original Gothic delighted RPG fans with its gritty gameplay and fantastical world – but now, it's set to return in a brand-new remake genre fans absolutely won't want to miss.
If you've never played Gothic before, it first launched in 2001 and impressed fans with its challenging combat and uniquely dark setting – a true genre gem. Although it's remained in the hearts of dedicated players since then, living on via mods and the like, the new Gothic 1 Remake is pushing the title back into the limelight, standing as a perfect starting point for any folks who missed out on the OG game two decades ago.
Although it faithfully builds upon its predecessor's foundation, it boasts modern visuals and everything from revamped combat to new features, making it a brilliant stepping stone into the Kingdom of Myrtana. Whether you enjoy the immersive open world of RPG giants like Skyrim and The Witcher 3 or the brutal combat of gems such as Elden Ring, the Gothic 1 Remake has it all and then some – with over 50 hours of gameplay to boot.
Players take on the role of the Nameless Hero, a convict with nothing to set them apart in the brutal world of Gothic following an orc invasion and prisoner rebellion, forced to grapple with everything from the wilderness to archaic magic. There's a plethora of detailed quests to complete along the way, foes to overcome, and various NPCs to interact with, of course, breathing life into the medieval-inspired fantasy setting.
Not only is the action-packed gameplay fun, but the world itself is also visually stunning with cascading waterfalls, rocky beaches, rolling fog, and the like – the Gothic 1 Remake rivals other 2026 titles with its modernized graphics, making it all the more appealing for those who didn't get to jump into the fray when the original game was released. Developer Alkimia Interactive and publisher THQ Nordic have made just about everything feel fresh.
Sold? You can wishlist the Gothic 1 Remake on Steam or pre-purchase it now for $49.99 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. There's not long left to wait now until its big June 5 release, so ready your swords and arrows.

After spending years with her head in various fantastical realms' clouds, Anna studied English Literature and then Medieval History at the University of Edinburgh, going on to specialize in narrative design and video game journalism as a writer. She has written for various publications since her postgraduate studies, including Dexerto, Fanbyte, GameSpot, IGN, PCGamesN, and more. When she's not frantically trying to form words into coherent sentences, she's probably daydreaming about becoming a fairy druid and befriending every animal or she's spending a thousand (more) hours traversing the Underdark in Baldur's Gate 3. If you spot her away from her PC, you'll always find Anna with a fantasy book, a handheld video game console of some sort, and a Tamagotchi or two on hand.
