Gothic was the RPG that didn't care if you survived, and now it's back with a remake
The Gothic 1 Remake is here, 25 years after the original
Gothic, the legendary 2001 fantasy action RPG that first pulled us into Myrtana, returns June 5 this year with a shiny brand-new remake – and it's a must-play for both newcomers and seasoned veterans alike.
A whopping 25 years have passed since Gothic, a gritty RPG from Germany, launched and took fans by storm with its unforgiving gameplay and dark world. Fans have kept it alive and kicking throughout the decades with mods and the like, but a new official remake is here now to give us a more modern taste of the Kingdom of Myrtana than ever before. It's visually impressive, just as action-packed as the original, and immersive to boot.
Headed by developer Alkimia Interactive and publisher THQ Nordic, the Gothic 1 Remake is faithful to its predecessor, rebuilding everything fans know and love from the ground up – but that doesn't mean it skimps out on any improvements. There are now more detailed, expanded abilities and questlines to look forward to, NPC routines and reactions, and a revamped combat system that fleshes out the core mechanics from the OG game.
The new Gothic is just as challenging as its 2001 counterpart, too, with players stepping into the shoes of the Nameless Hero – a lifelong convict with no fancy backstory – and having to traverse a grim world riddled with formidable foes and ancient, dangerous magic. It's not a walk through the park by any means, but it's certainly Gothic, with unrestricted open-world exploration, over 50 hours of gameplay, and a level of immersion that'll keep you hooked.
The first Gothic might've been mind-bogglingly beautiful in the early 2000s, but the remake gives its foundation a much-needed boost into 2026 with modern-day graphics and physics. The colony has never looked so good, or played so well – it's perfect for both nostalgia-stricken superfans and curious new players.
If you're tempted, you can pre-order the Gothic 1 Remake now for $49.99 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Before you know it, you'll be pulled into the Valley of Mines.

After spending years with her head in various fantastical realms' clouds, Anna studied English Literature and then Medieval History at the University of Edinburgh, going on to specialize in narrative design and video game journalism as a writer. She has written for various publications since her postgraduate studies, including Dexerto, Fanbyte, GameSpot, IGN, PCGamesN, and more. When she's not frantically trying to form words into coherent sentences, she's probably daydreaming about becoming a fairy druid and befriending every animal or she's spending a thousand (more) hours traversing the Underdark in Baldur's Gate 3. If you spot her away from her PC, you'll always find Anna with a fantasy book, a handheld video game console of some sort, and a Tamagotchi or two on hand.
