Get to delving with this free-to-play 3D dungeon RPG
Crack open that portal of despair and start slaying

Is there anything more quintessentially RPG than journeying into a monster-packed dungeon to break a generational curse? It's as connected to the genre as killing rats in a tavern basement for your first mission. If you're trying to find a first-person RPG that feels current while paying respect to its rich history, look no further than Wizardry Variants Daphne. Whether you want to do a deep dive on your PC or just grind for quick XP on your mobile device, you'll savor the risk in each moment.

The once and future king
Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, in addition to having a name that sounds like an incredible prog rock album, is one of the first RPGs ever made, released for PCs in 1981. You'd gather a group of adventurers and battle gorgeously rendered pixel art baddies. Wizardry Variants Daphne places itself in the lineage of the original.
Once every 100 years, a curse of death flows from an abyss into the world. Normally, a king would be protecting the common folk, but King Iver has vanished, and it's up to you to form a team of adventurers, save the king, and help seal the Abyss.
Like most games in this series, you're exploring a dungeon from a first-person perspective, immersing yourself in the oppressive world. As you journey, you'll be able to gather remains of fallen adventurers, either by purchasing them at a jeweler or finding them in the dungeon. With your power, the Right Hand of Reversal, you can use the remains to unlock fellow adventurers. There's no character creation system. Instead, you unlock a diverse and captivating cast with whom you can form a party of five, building teamwork that fosters bonds over multiple dungeon dives.
You've got six classes and four races. You know what works best for your playstyle, so you can find and focus on characters that suit it. You might be compelled by a dextrous character and gravitate toward a beastfolk thief. Healing is vital, so a dwarven priest could be your next pick. How you decide to construct your party is entirely up to you and the luck of the draw from spending your remains.
Choose thy fate
Wizardry Variants Daphne offers dungeons that have a sense of real danger. You won't level up just by gaining experience—you must rest at an inn first, leading to dangerous loot-driven ventures where you're hoping to get out before the abyss overtakes you. The complex command-based battles promote deep strategy, providing a more action-oriented feel. Your adventurers can die, but you may be able to take them to a temple to be resurrected. It's a dangerous, dark fantasy world that you can't take lightly. The gameplay is challenging but rewarding, as befits any game with the name "Wizardry" in the title.
With options to play on PC, Android, or iOS, this release is the biggest news in the world of Wizardry since the reboot in 2023. You can see the investment in the game, with compelling character design by manga artist Yusuke Kozaki, intense dungeons, and even voice acting from folks such as Doug Cockle. That investment is already paying dividends, with a large player base and high download numbers in Japan, proving this is a core-RPG that's gaining significant traction. If you're trying to find a modern game with an old-school temperament, Wizardry Variants Daphne is a great choice. You can lose yourself in the game for hours. The reward is worth the risk.
