After first premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, Exit 8 is now one of the highest-rated video game movies of all time.
Based on the viral indie horror video game of the same name, the movie follows a character known only as The Lost Man (Kazunari Ninomiya) who learns that his girlfriend is pregnant and panics at the idea of becoming a father. When he gets off the train, he finds himself trapped in an endlessly looping corridor. Much like the game, The Lost Man must proceed to Exit 8 by identifying the anomalies in each corridor... or be sent back to the very beginning. Genki Kawamura directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kentaro Hirase.
The film currently sits at a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, with some critics calling it a "triumphant realisation and expansion of the original concept," and a "surprisingly heartfelt exploration of life, regret, and self-reflection." The score is based on a whopping 88 reviews (and there aren't enough audience reviews to reflect a Popcorn Meter score just yet).
Article continues belowAs of right now, the highest-rated video game movie on Rotten Tomatoes is Sonic the Hedgehog, with 86%... as of right now, this makes Exit 8 the highest-rated video game adaptation on Rotten Tomatoes (though the list doesn't seem exact at the moment and has yet to be given a proper update to reflect Exit 8 as number one).
Exit 8 releases in theaters in the US now and will hit the UK on April 24. For more, check out our list of upcoming video game movies.
