Milly Alcock says she hasn't spoken to previous Supergirl actors like Melissa Benoist and Sasha Calle about playing Kara Zor-El: "They're just people living their lives"

Milly Alcock is making history as the first Supergirl to get her own movie in over 40 years. But rather than looking backward at what's come before, Alcock says she's avoided asking previous actors who have filled the role for advice or for their blessing.

"They're just people living their lives. It's not like we have this blood bond," Alcock tells Vanity Fair, explaining that the collaborative nature of film doesn't mean that actors must share those kinds of connections. "You have to respect that they don't owe you that."

Alcock is the fifth actor to portray Supergirl in live action. The first was Helen Slater, who starred in 1984's eponymous Supergirl film, a spin-off of the classic Christopher Reeve Superman movies. Then, decades later, Laura Vendervoort portrayed Kara Zor-El in 2007's season 7 of Smallville. Sasha Calle also portrayed Kara Zor-El in 2023's ill-fated The Flash. However, the longest running Supergirl actor by far is Melissa Benoist who played the character for six seasons of her own show.

The new DC Universe version of Supergirl first appeared in last year's Superman with a cameo that establishes her as a drunken, party girl equivalent of the Man of Steel. The new movie will force her to go beyond her gruff exterior in order to save Krypto from poison, as seen in the latest trailer for the movie.
