Turns out this is wrong. According to Nintendo UK,something was lost in translation and this assertion was the reporter's NOT a direct quote from Nintendo. And that decline? Nowhere near 50% apparently:more like 20%, according to a quote from President of the company, Satoru Iwata.
The official line from Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata is this:
Regarding "the decline of our software shipment in [...] the European market, we acknowledge it as a big issue because, even though the decrease in actual sales in the markets was smaller than the decrease in our shipments, the actual sales declined about 20%. Some say it is due to piracy activities made possible by devices such as Magic-Coms (e.g. the R4), but I don't believe it's the only reason."
So depite the continued efforts of Nintendo to stem piracyfacilitated byR4 cards, it's by no meansbelieved to be significantly linked to the 20% decline in Euro software sales.
We'd love to hear your opinion on this story. Do you own an R4 card? What do you use it for? Are you aware that downloading pirated games for them is illegal?
