Guacamelee dev's new game has the same colorful style with a darker twist

Just a flesh wound.

Just a flesh wound.

Severed will catch you off guard. It lures you in with its bright, pastel colors and soothing music, creating an otherworldly vibe. Maybe this is some sort of outerspace adventure? And then BAM! you see your character's reflection for the first time, and she's obviously been through hell. One of her arms is a ruined stump, and she's covered with nicks and scrapes. That's when a monstrous figure who looks like death emerges from the floor and hands you a blood-red sword. Wait, what is this game again?

Let's start again: Severed is a first-person, touch-based adventure game coming to the Vita. It's from the same talented team that brought us Guacamelee, so naturally its focus is combat. There are plenty of monsters ready to take your other arm (and a lot more), but don't think you can just swipe your fingers all over the place and expect to win. Severed's monsters are mini-puzzles unto themselves, with patterns and tricks you'll need to master to survive.

All this monster slaying is wrapped up in a vibrant world that draws inspiration from Central and Native American art styles. It's a unique mix of high-fantasy and real-life designs that really make it pop against the greys and browns of so many modern games. Of course, Severed is still a ways away from release, so there's plenty we don't know about this intriguing game. Maybe there's a sick monster-arm transplant available down the line.

Be sure to check out the rest of the gallery for more details on Severed.
