Plants vs. Zombies finally hitting Android next year

Before there was Angry Birds, the king of iPhone games was Plants vs. Zombies. The comically gory tower-defense game became a hit as a PC game before it lit up the iPhone sales charts, and now it's hoping to do the same on Android.

A director at PopCap Games, the publisher behind Plants vs. Zombies, said in an interview, "I am delighted to confirm that we are working on bringing ... Plants vs. Zombies to Android in early 2011."

For those unfamiliar with Plants vs. Zombies, here's all you need to know: players can shoot cabbage catapults at zombies that wear construction cones and buckets on their heads. That pretty much sums it up.

The director also noted that Peggle, a fellow PopCap classic, will be coming to Android around the same time. This marks the first games from PopCap to hit the Android Market.

This is the latest announcement in a string of big Android gaming news. Id Software's mobile Rage title will be ported over from the iPhone, and Facebook games giant Zynga has just confirmed support for Android. Google's operating system is quickly losing its reputationof being devoid of games.
