Looks like Gran Turismo 5 still has a few surprises up its sleeve yet, including the fastest car in the world. Which doesn't actually exist in reality. While the idea sounds more like something you'd find in Ridge Racer than a serious racing sim like GT5, the X1 Prototype is not something to be dismissed as a silly unlockable. Not least because its creation has been overseen by legendary F1 car designer Adrian Newey and the Red Bull racing team.
The idea came from an internal debate at Polyphony. The question was posed: ‘If you built the fastest racing car on land, one that throws aside all rules and regulations, what would that car look like, how would it perform and how would it feel to drive?'
Polyphony and Red Bull have collaborated to answer that question with a virtual race car - and come up with the X1 Prototype, which you can see in this video. Well, almost see in this video - either it's a massive teaser or the car will only appear in silhouette form in the game.
There aren't many more details than that to go on, but it has been confirmed that the car will be playable in GT5. Quite how fast it will go round the Nurburgring remains to be seen, but from the glimpses of its Le Mans/F1 crossover styling, it does look damn slick.
Here's hoping they use it for the inevitable 'Drive 100m and stop in the box' license test.
