50 greatest Pixar moments

1. Carl and Ellie

The moment: The opening montage to Up remains the studio's most moving, ambitious sequence, tracing the characters' relationship from childhood courtship to Ellie's devastating death.

Why it's great: Forget this is animation, and it's a sequence to rival Ozu or Bergman for emotional impact and narrative sophistication, showing just how far Pixar has come.

Pixar say: Pete Docter on creating the sequence - "I wanted it to feel almost like Carl’s memory of the events in his life so the saturation of colour and even the way we shot things, or a little more just kind of as though we’re standing back presenting it instead of experiencing it quite as much. I think all of that contributed to the emotion of it."
