12 Star Wars characters who DEFINITELY deserve a spin-off movie

6. Kylo Ren

What happened to Ben Solo? How did the son of everyone’s favourite General Princess and lovable smuggler rogue, turn into a dark, Force-wielding brat with daddy issues? There’s a lot of questions to that character and his backstory, and you could do so much with a full film to explore them. Growing up on the Millennium Falcon? Wookie day care? The Solo’s discovering their son is Force sensitive and then sending him off to study under Luke at Jedi Academy? That last bit alone could make this Star Wars’ Harry Potter. And that’s without touching what must have been the traumatic journey to become a Knight of Ren, and ultimately destroying the last Jedi order. He’s both Harry and Voldemort. This is probably one of the few characters that could pull of a rites of passage style story about growing up in the Star Wars world.

5. Darth Maul

The red and black one is a huge fan favourite and arguably the best thing to come out of the prequel trilogy. His popularity has seen him take on a prominent and well catalogued role in the Rebels cartoon, so a movie would likely have to look back into his past. His rise into the Sith, and training, would be an ideal area for the film to tackle. The key thing here is that Maul’s big scrap in The Phantom Menace is still a highlight, and one of the coolest moments for the series, period. There’s scope here to make a movie starring Maul into a massive fight spectacular - no other character could support an entirely combat-focused film and this could easily be a Raid or Matrix entry for the universe.

4. Cassian Andor

If you’re not sure how a Cassian Andor movie might work then think of this: he’s basically Star Wars’ James Bond, referred to in Rogue One as "one of the most capable agents within Rebel Intelligence." You only have to watch his introduction there, meeting with contacts in seedy back alleys (before assassinating them to keep them quiet) to see how easily a 007 style template would work here - going undercover in dust bowl dive planets one minute, turning up to Imperial balls in the best threads the next. Actor Diego Luna nails that quiet, reserved machismo in creating the character but also reveals a slightly more tender side (eventually), which would create the perfect lover/fighter/spy. We’ll just have to wait to see if he wants his blue milk shaken or stirred.

3. Mace Windu

The big question here is who would play a younger Samuel L Jackson? He’s clearly too old to be bouncing off the walls and waving his purple lightsaber about (quiet at the back). But some kind of flashback, memoir setup could give us the best of both worlds. Often referred to as the Jedi Order’s ‘greatest champion’, placing Windu at the centre of his own movie could provide plenty of possibilities. He was very active in the Clone Wars, prior to his death, which would be a great opportunity to put a Jedi right in the middle of huge, big box office fights. Or the movie could go further back and find out how he earned his rep within the Order.

2. Boba Fett

Spoilers: this is very likely going to happen. Rumour has it that Disney was minutes away from announcing a Josh Trank directed Boba Fett movie at 2015’s Star Wars Celebration. However reports of Trank’s bad behaviour making the Fantastic Four reboot led to its cancellation seconds before journalists arrived - logos and posters were still allegedly being taken down as people filed in, it was that close. It’s easy to see why Fett’s in the running - from only minutes of screen time he’s become a cult figure in the Star Wars universe. Plus that gadget laden armour and morally dubious ‘highest bidder’ mentality creates a rich potential for storytelling.

1. Obi-Wan

This is the big one. The fans want it, and even Ewan McGregor himself thinks an Obi-Wan movie is a good idea, pointing out he’s the perfect age to play a post-prequel, pre-original trilogy wilderness years take on the character. What was he doing while in exile before Luke found him? The interesting thing here is it would be unlike any other Jedi led movie, with Kenobi as an outcast, trying to hide his past from everyone. You could do a real western/last samurai kind of movie with a wandering hero trying to keep his head down, but being dragged into solving some remote Tatooine town’s problems.
