Aussie ratings board clarifies its position on drug use in Velvet Assassin; says historical and medical context justifies in-game use of morphine.

The Australian Classification Board caused yet another stir down under last week, with Kotaku first reporting that upcoming stealth actioner Velvet Assassin had been given an MA15+ rating, the highest rating available for a game in Australia. The decision would ordinarily be unremarkable, except for the fact that Velvet Assassin contains morphine as a type of in-game power-up. Last year, Fallout 3 was initially refused classification down under because it showed positive effects from in-game drug use--specifically, morphine.

The company said it wanted to create Violette Summer as a "normal woman, not only in physique, but also in terms of her abilities." Imagine our surprise when we opened the attachment to find a sultry young woman with D-Cup breasts and a tiny waistline, wearing a nightie and holding a Luger.

It wasn't exactly what we had imagined a normal woman from 1940's France would look like, so we sent back a few questions to find out what the team meant by this statement.

Velvet Assassin is still on course for release in 2008 despite reports to the contrary, publisher Gamecock has told VideoGamer.com.

Recent reports had suggested that the upcoming stealth-based PC and Xbox 360 World War II game had slipped from October 2008 to early 2009.

However, when contacted for clarification by VideoGamer.com this morning, a representative from GameCock told us that the game's release date was "inconclusive" and that "as far as I'm aware it is still this year".

Eurogamer reports that Gamecock has decided to pull Velvet Assassin from October 2008 in favour of an early 2009 release.

This will bring the European launch in-line with the US, a spokesperson for the publisher told Eurogamer. And, handily, the move also avoids the routinely packed festive season while affording a little extra development time.

Velvet Assassin, formerly titled Sabotage, is the sneaky PC and Xbox 360 World War II game based on real-life British spy Violette Szabo, whose secretive and horrific past is relived while she lies motionless in a coma.

Sabotage renamed as Velvet Assassin (News)

In order to avoid confusion with EA and Pandemic's Saboteur, Gamecock and Replay Studios have announced that the new name of Sabotage is Velvet Assassin.

The main character is the resistance fighter and Allied agent Violette Summer (based on the real historic heroine Violette Szabo) who has to infiltrate German military camps in France, Poland and Germany during World War II and sabotate them, eliminate high-ranking Nazi officers, rescue civilian hostages or solve other missions.

Velvet Assassin will be released for the PC and major consoles later this year.
