This was supposed to be Square Enix’s attempt to make a truly global RPG. Not so much a Japanese RPG, more an Everywhere-RPG. So why is the opening hour so utterly confusing and unwelcoming? An unfamiliar battle system, all stats and weird terminology and with not much in the way of a helping hand. We can’t think of an RPG that starts this badly. ...

Amazon is kicking off the final week's countdown to Black Friday with a fairly good Xbox 360 deal. Kicking off early this morning, if you buy the Xbox 360 Elite Holiday bundle, you get a free copy of Square Enix' The Last Remnant and 4,000 Microsoft points.

That means for $400 you're getting an Xbox 360 with a 120 GB hard drive, copies of LEGO Indiana Jones (yay), Kung Fu Panda (boo), and The Last Remnant (yay, I think) as well as about $50 in Microsoft points. That's what we in the biz like to call a hell of a deal. You'll have to enter the promotion code XBOXDEAL during checkout and supplies are limited for the day-long deal.

Square Enix has teased fans over the possibility of including the original Japanese dialogue in the PS3 version of inbound JRPG The Last Remnant.

The Xbox 360 version of the game, described by Square Enix president as "the cornerstone" of its worldwide strategy, is due out on Thursday, with PS3 and PC versions planned but without a release date.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com during an interview with the development team in Tokyo, dialogue editor Yuji Isogawa said "we'll see" in response to a question about the possibility of including the original Japanese voice over work in the PS3 version.
God knows I do, especially on new J-RPGs. Great news for any of you who agree with me as Amazon is listing SquareEnix's next big release, The Last Remnant at $39.96, about $20 off the normal price when you pre-order. Not only that, but they'll also throw in a bonus code that will unlock a couple of formations for you to use in-game. In addition to that, they've also got $20 off Infinite Undiscovery which comes with a limited foil print and a code that unlocks some unique in-game items. Together, that's two new great J-RPGs for $80 with a bunch of bonus stuff, so if you've got the funds, go take advantage of these deals. I already have ;)"

Despite all the negative press that Square Enix have been getting from fans on Western Shores, Japanese gamers don't really seem anywhere near as concerned. Famitsu published a list of Japan's most anticipated games and Square Enix had a staggering 9 games from the list which had 15 titles.

What's even more interesting is that two of the titles are appearing on the 360 (Star Ocean 4 and The Last Remnant), but even though the Xbox 360 still doesn't hold much weight in Japan, it seems to peaking interest finally.
Forget about how it's the latest and greatest 360 RPG from Japan, and how it uses Unreal Engine 3 for its graphics, and how it's coming out in about a month (PS3 owners will have to wait longer). No, the real story behind this game, the one that has been dreadfully underreported on so far, is that you use this mole-like thing to help you dig for weapon-building material. Look out, Western developers!
The game will feature 22 achievements for the full 1000 points, and should be quite interesting, as even the achievements that aren't secret are secret in themselves. For example, one of the achievements reads "Do you want a challenge? Defeat the monster that appears from a certain quest." On top of these achievements, there are also five actual secret achievements, two of which are 200 points apiece.

With so much buzz happening around this years TGS, XboxOZ360-Gamer takes a look at the yearly convention, but not from the typical angle.

XboxOZ360 writes: "With the TGS '08 now well under way, and the Microsoft Keynote out of the way, we are starting to see the various Developers showing off their wares to the press and crowds that gather at the annual Tokyo Games Show.

It's a show that really is something a little bit different, and brings all sorts of characters out of the woodwork. Especially Japanese Cosplay followers who spend not only a great deal of time, but money of some of their costumes, and take the event very seriously."

Square Enix has gone PC. On the first day of the show, the Japanese game publisher announced that Final Fantasy XIII is coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 (in Europe and North America only) and PC. During a press conference following the Microsoft event, Final Fantasy XIII Producer Yoshinori Kitase discussed the new development strategy that Square Enix has taken with its upcoming games.

Aside from the new The Last Remnant game, which is being created for Xbox 360 and PS3 using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 externally, all new internally-developed games from Square Enix, including Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII Versus, and an untitled new massively multiplayer online game, utilize the new PC-based Crystal Tools development environment. These tools allow development teams to create cross-platform games.

"The content will be the same on all platforms," said Kitase. "However, we have yet to determine how many discs will be required for the 360 version. We'll have to consider the differences between formats. Currently the game is being built on PC, where it's actually functional. We're still focusing on making it work on PS3, so it's difficult to know how long the process of taking it to 360 will take."

Thanks to the new PC development platform, Kitase added, "Now that we're developing on a PC base, the pace is going a bit faster," Kitase said. "We haven't introduced new footage of the game, but we should be able to show something new in the near future."

Square Enix showed the beautiful pre-rendered trailer for Final Fantasy XIII at the end of the Microsoft press conference. The publisher has a big event scheduled for Tokyo next month where the first new information will be revealed on all Final Fantasy titles. Previously, the publisher released its online game, Final Fantasy XII, on Xbox 360 and PC.

PS3 Fanboy: "The official site of the The Last Remnant is now online. There's a trailer, a prologue, information on the battle system, 4 characters with voices and 12 screenshots. You can even choose between three different songs as your background music. The game prologue mentions Remnants as ancient artifacts of awesome power but unknown origins, and that mankind's usage of them has caused "a rift in the world's balance." Isn't there always a rift in the world's balance in every Square game?"
