"Hey everyone! Here is a weekly look at X-Box games that never got the praise they deserve!

So today we are going to talk about the ill-fated Shadowrun for the 360!

FASA Studious at first wanted to create a game based of the Shadowrun universe but wanted to turn the commonly known Cyber-Punk Pen and Paper RPG into a full blown First-Person Shooter. The original concept had a Single Player mode but was scrapped for the development of the PC version so Microsoft can promote Games for Windows Live (According to one of the Game Testers known as ext360).

The game was reminiscent of Counter Strike with its round by round purchases which many praised (due to CS' popularity of course). Its shooting mechanics were detailed and rewarded the player for the most accuracy, it was also based of the Halo 1 engine which led to further praise form the Competitive console community…

But that was just the problem."

As part of his introduction to the piece, Fulton, who worked in-depth on Microsoft's online FPS Shadowrun to attempt solutions to these issues, notes:

"Of all the ways I spend my free time, playing games online is the only one I would describe as 'frequently barbaric'. Insults of all kinds, including racist and homophobic slurs, are commonplace."
But as budgets swell, stockholders throw tantrums, and release dates draw near, there's a whole myriad of snafus can explode in the face of well meaning folks. Plenty of games spit in the eye of gamers’ expectations and miscarry at retailers every year - that’s not special. These games are the great white whales that tanked so hard they dragged entire companies down with them. ...

The Shadowrun forums are due to be closed in the next few weeks but there's hope of further products from the brand emerging in the future.

Shadowrun developer FASA recently closed its doors to the public, presumably after the damp reception the 360 and PC game received. If you remember it was the first game for 360 and PC that allowed cross-platform gaming between both parties. You may also remember that we scored it 6/10.

A post on the Shadowrun forums reads: "We're going to be ...
The boss of the now-defunct FASA Studio has established a new development house and has gotten the rights to a number of IPs back from Microsoft.

Jordan Weisman's new studio, Smith & Tinker, has the rights to Crimson Skies, Shadowrun and MechWarrior. According to the studio's official website, it also has the rights to additional properties from the FASA back catalogue.

"We're not quite ready to announce our plans for each property, but please be assured that our goal is to ...
Sept 13, 2007

FASA Studio, responsible for MS's first cross-platform shooter Shadowrun, has officially closed for business.

A statement was released to the Shadowrun community from studio manager Mitch Gitelman:

"It is my sad duty to announce that FASA Studio has officially closed its doors. Today was the official last day of employment for those of us who had not moved on to other positions within Microsoft Game Studios. While the rumors have been circulating forever, we chose to wait on an ...
Shadowrun developer FASA Studio has indeed closed its doors with studio manager Mitch Gitelman confirming the news on the official Shadowrun community forums today. According to Gitelman, today was the last official day of work for employees still at FASA, with many former FASA team members moving on to other positions at Microsoft Game Studios.

Rumors about the studio's closure surfaced in March of this year, well before Shadowrun shipped, when a former FASA worker wrote of an employee exodus and that decision makers would "cut the tumor that is FASA Studio from the body of Microsoft."

The first-person title, released in May, features offline and online cross platform play between Xbox 360 and Windows Vista owners for up to 16 players.

Those among us who decided to ignore the content qualms and license-use to enjoy the game itself, however, have been privy to some other issues that have cropped up since early after release. Long waits for matchmaking, broken achievements, and dumb bots were but a few of the problems that revealed themselves over extended playtime.

The highly anticipated title update for Shadowrun is now available. It should force you to automatically update when you sign on, but as the developers have said - be patient! It will take a while to make it around the world, and there will be problems when it first comes out. There always are. Some people won't get notified, some people will have trouble downloading.

All good things must come to an end, and today the final episode of Rooster Teeth's 1-800-MAGIC series, based on "Shadowrun," will be released.

The four part series follows an unfortunate Shadowrunner as he discovers magic, which has returned to the world in "Shadowrun." In the previous three episodes of the 1-800-MAGIC informational videos, our favorite Shadowrunner struggles through insurmountable odds and an uncontrollable use of magic. Compounded by the unhelpful 1-800-MAGIC help line and disobliging teammates, the Shadowrunner is finally provided with some thoughtful guidance to control his unique powers.
A group of naughty hackers have cracked Shadowrun, one of the first Vista-only games on PC, and released a file that allows Windows XP users to play the game.

Giving a middle finger to Microsoft's release strategy, the hacking group Razor1911 has managed to subvert the Win XP lockout and eliminate the need for DirectX 10 with a small, 4MB ...
Free PC Shadowrun with Halo 2 purchase. Already? (News)

While Frank and Ben Kuchera of Ars Technica are rather enamored with Shadowrun on the 360 and the PC, as a game it's a rather hard sell. The price is high for a multiplayer-only title, and of course it requires Vista to run. Same thing with Halo 2 on the PC: it's basically a older Xbox game that requires Vista for absolutely no reason and shows that Live on Windows still has quite a ways to go before it's a killer-app. Clearly these games aren't worth $50 apiece. Luckily, Circuit City has you covered: buy Halo 2 on the PC for $40, get Shadowrun free. It's like only being charged $20 for each game and, if you have Vista, that's a helluva deal.

He is not sure what such an aggressive sale says about the earning potential of these two games, but if you were interested in either of them and were just waiting for the price to come down, today is your lucky day. Sure, they won't throw a copy of Vista in there to sweeten the deal, but it's still an inexpensive way to try out the games and the new Live service for PCs.

With Lineage mercenaries coming from every direction to take control of the artifact, you need all the tools you can get to protect the assets of RNA Corporation. We are always looking for more talent to add to our pool and we're also interested in keeping our employees happy. These needs have led us to create several tools to help recruit others to joining RNA and for current employees to have a place to unwind with their coworkers. Remember: Referrals equal bonuses!

For those Xbox 360 users who still need to familiarize themselves with the battle between the Lineage and RNA Corporation, the "Shadowrun" Xbox 360 demo is now available on Xbox LIVE®. The "Shadowrun" demo will provide only a glimpse of what makes this title so innovative, including one map, PowerStation, and limited races, tech and magic. Gamers will still have the opportunity to sharpen their deadly combinations in three training chapters and the ability to play both against bots and in public matches.

Additionally, our friends at Rooster Teeth have put together their own informational video and support line for "Shadowrun," which can be seen at Shadowrun.com, Xbox LIVE Marketplace, Xbox.com and www.roosterteeth.com.* Keep these sites bookmarked for upcoming videos in the series.

Everything you need to start your own "Shadowrun" fan site is available online ¿ Web site interface components, screenshots, desktop wallpapers, and Web-ready artwork.
Whatever you're expecting from Shadowrun, you're bound to be disappointed.

Are you a fan of the pen-and-paper role-playing universe that combined cyberpunk tech with fantastical magic? Don't expect to find the depth of that fiction here. Shadowrun is a first person shooter, not an RPG, and the flimsy instruction manual contains far more story and character than the game itself.

Okay, so what if all you're looking for is a solid action experience to tide you over until Halo 3? Unfortunately, ...

While nobody can really say if PC gamers will embrace achivement points, it seems likely they will. Many already spend colossal amounts of time plugging away for experience points in MMOs, performing all sorts of strange tasks in order to get that one reagent to drop, or to level up that one weapon skill. Well, same deal with the achievement points. You do lots of weird stuff and get rewarded; pretty basic. Yet on the Xbox 360 the meta-game of achievement grinding roots itself deeper and deeper in X360 gamers' minds every day, spurring some to go out and buy King Kong and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles just because their achievements are so easy to unlock. It's a strange fascination since achievement points don't do anything. They just sit there, a public aggregate, a numerical representation of your dedication to gaming, or embarrassing reminder of how you spend your time.

Full achievement requirement details and new screens available.
The recently opened Shadowrun beta isn't perfect. The artwork is unfinished, the frame rate can be choppy, the performance is often sluggish and sometimes the game's AI bots are the only competitors available to play. Most annoyingly, just two maps are currently offered, though we sampled at least three during our last developer demo. So why can't we tear ourselves away?

Because even at this still early stage, the game's unique and diverse strengths shine through. The Shadowrun experience is ...

Microsoft executive Shane Kim has commented on mixed buzz over the firm's Shadowrun being an FPS, admitting that "we showed the title prematurely at E3", but that the firm is "working hard" to reverse that with a Beta and press tours.

Specifically, when asked what he thought of negative initial reaction to the FASA-developed Xbox 360 and PC title Shadowrun - the franchise, revealed at E3 2006, had long been presumed by fans to work best in RPG form - Kim commented:

"That reaction has been around for a long time, so we've had a long time to deal with it. I think as people get their hands on it, they'll realize that yes, it's not an RPG, but that the FASA team has done a really good job of setting a first-person shooter within the Shadowrun universe."
The first to allow them to do that is Shadowrun, a new first-person shooter from FASA Studio.

Today, Microsoft finally revealed when geeks can settle the age-old "keyboard and mouse or controller" debate. Both the Vista and Xbox 360 versions of Shadowrun will be available in June. Microsoft did not specify when in June Shadowrun would be released.
FASA is testing out some Shadowrun LAN style this Saturday, March 17th and needs some testers.

FPS fans finally get their chance to settle it: keyboard and mouse versus controller.

Microsoft says Shadowrun, its version of the RPG and pen and paper classic by FASA, is on track for release in late 2007, sort of--no specific date is available at this time. But what is clear is that this version will veer from its lineage to mimic Counter-Strike in many ways, including being a multiplayer FPS with no single player campaign. Moreover, Xbox 360 and PC gamers will be able to engage in joint gunfights for the first time.
A new trailer for Shadowrun has indicated that PC gamers wanting to play against Xbox 360 owners online will need a Live Gold account.

A caption, pointed out by Joystiq, displayed in the closing scenes of the trailer reads: "Cross platform play requires Xbox Live Gold account and hard drive (on Xbox 360), or Games for Windows - Live Gold account (on Windows)."

So, the chance to beat on pad-using console n00bs is one incentive for PC owners to cough up the cash for a Gold account - Microsoft ...

When Joystiq.com spoke with PR Manager Michael Wolf about Games for Windows Live, he was sparse in details regarding a Games for Windows Live Gold account. "All I can say now is that we're working to make a Gold membership worthwhile even if you're only connecting to Live from Windows Vista," he said.

It seems Microsoft has revealed one of those incentives in the form of cross-platform multiplayer. Text shown at the end of the latest Shadowrun trailer notes that "cross platform play requires Xbox LIVE Gold ... or Games for Windows -- LIVE Gold account (on Windows)."
After getting our first look at Shadowrun - the latest first-person shooter from FASA Interactive and Microsoft Game Studios - we had several concerns. The decision to not include a single-player campaign in a game based on the popular pen and paper role-playing franchise seemed questionable at best. But more importantly, Shadowrun will be the flagship title for Windows Vistas Live Anywhere service, which allows 360 and PC players to challenge each other online; and we were worried about ...
Ditching the role-playing elements of the original game for straight up action, Shadowrun has been completely overhauled for its debut on Xbox 360 and Windows Vista. You wont find a densely woven story or complex character development here; rather, action is the name of the game in this reincarnation of the series. In fact, Shadowrun skimps on solo play and goes for multiplayer gold with online gameplay between Xbox 360 and Windows Vista. The lack of a substantial single player experience could ...
Wednesday 10 May 2006
Microsoft has revealed Shadowrun, a new FPS shooter for Xbox 360 and Windows Vista on PC, due for release in January 2007.

The game is set in the near future world of the Shadowrun role-playing franchise (the type that uses real-life dice), where magic has returned to the world after a 5,000-year absence, sparking a conflict between two different factions interested in harnessing the power. Hoping to use the magic for profit are the global corporation RNA, while elfish ...
FASA, developer and creator of pen 'n' paper cyberpunk game Shadowrun, appears to be hard at work on an Xbox 360 version of its hit dice-rolling RPG.

A page on the official FASA site would appear to show characters from the game and - more importantly - typing www.shadowrun.com into your browser links directly to the same webpage.

The developer is actually owned by Microsoft, which would result in an Xbox 360-only release. And with the classic Shadowrun dice-based system ...
