Rumors about This is Vegas' demise started to boil over this past weekend when it was noticed the game's SKU had suspiciously been removed from Gamestop's database.

Add to the fact that little news about the title has come out since January, and that that its original publisher, Midway Games, was purchased by Warner Bros. isn't helping things.

So has the game been canned?

IGN contacted Warner Bros. to clear some of this up, and the publisher issued them the following statement, simply saying: "This is Vegas is currently in production."

Eurogamer writes: "Midway has decided GTA rival This is Vegas is better off in 2009, according to its latest financial statement.

The PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 game had been expected this autumn, but no reason was given for the delay. Perhaps the move was made to unclog what interim Midway boss Matt Booty called "possibly our strongest holiday line-up in recent years" in the money report."

With Midway Games seeking to recapture the total Vegas experience in its upcoming This is Vegas, it's not entirely surprising that the game won't be sticking to its originally announced release date.

A Midway representative confirmed for GameSpot today that This is Vegas has been delayed to 2009 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. However, it will be appearing in playable form at the E3 Media & Business Summit.

Speaking to MCV following Midway's 2008 Gamers' Day in Las Vegas, International Executive Vice President Martin Spiess has blown the trumpet of the publisher's upcoming open-world game and big hope for 2008, This is Vegas.

"We have taken open-world gaming to the next level. All the things you want to do in a GTA kind of game but can't - like walking through a building and everything - you can actually do in This is Vegas. You can use the slot machine, go into a nightclub and do things you always wanted to do," said Spiess.

Just in case we were left in any doubt as to how spectacular a gaming experience Spiess hopes This is Vegas will be, he added: "You can experience something completely new. That's the superior level we've taken these open-world games to."
