360 - Dark Sector - Five years of Dark Sector PR coming to an end Digital Extremes has released a new batch of screenshots showing its long, long, long in development sci-fi action game Dark Sector, which should be with us this month. Five years ago the dark and moody third-person shooter was originally set in space, with an abundance of generic space marines. Now it takes place in communist Russia, which is clearly much better. Apart from the straight-forward shooting, the main attraction is the ...

360 - Dark Sector - CVG: Dark Sector PS3 cancellation CVG reports that Digital Extremes CEO James Schmalz has explained yesterday's comments from a team member suggesting that sci-fi slasher Dark Sector was almost canned on PS3.

The game's producer was quoted as saying that the PS3 version was "just not running as good as 360," and the developer had "serious discussions about what we were going to do".

"Never once did we feel we could not pull off the PS3 version of Dark Sector," DE CEO Schmalz told CVG via e-mail this morning. "As with all PS3 games, it takes skill and time to optimize and we spent a great deal of time doing that. At no time did we ever think, 'It's not going to be optimized enough, so let's talk to D3 about canning it.' That is just not true."

360 - Dark Sector - Dark Sector in competition with Prototype, says Digital Extremes Videogaming247 is reporting that Digital Extremes guy Dave Kudirka sees Prototype in the same space as his baby Dark Sector, saying, "There are a few action titles coming out in this first quarter that we'll be competing with, but Prototype is definitely the title that appears to have generated comparison to Dark Sector in the online community.

"I think the attractive monster-as-hero convention is the strongest connection between the two titles. And names like Devil May Cry, Metal Gear, and Grand Theft Auto always cast a big shadow, especially when you're bringing a new IP to the table."

360 - Dark Sector - Ripten: Hands-On with Dark Sector Multiplayer (Bonus Official Screenshot Gallery!) Ripten's Dan Landis writes:

During GDC, the Ripten crew was privy to an exclusive invite-only shindig presented by the good people at D3Publishing. What did we do? Well, we sat down in front of some system-linked Xbox 360's and proceeded to tear the shit out of each other in a few rounds of Digital Extremes' new game, Dark Sector.

Steve Sinclair, Project Lead for the game, ran through a bit of the single player with us first. He showed us what is essentially the tutorial, the events leading up to Hayden (Dark Sector's main character) getting infected with awesomeness, and then skipped around to later levels to show us some upgraded bad-assery.

360 - Dark Sector - Easy does it: Be careful of what games you want to defend Following news last week that Australian censors have withheld yet another game (Dark Sector) from adult players, most gamers would feel frustration at the inequity of the current classification regime.

But Dr. Brett Hutchins, a passionate gamer and a senior lecturer in Communications and Media Studies at Melbourne's Monash University, believes the lack of an R18+ rating for games in Australia might actually be good for the long-term health and acceptance of interactive entertainment.

The gaming community should be very careful about what games they use to rally around and prosecute the classification system. In much of the public eye, unnecessary and mindless games like Manhunt 2, which rely on extreme violence to shock, titillate and garner attention, are only going to reinforce the stereotypes that gamers are fighting to overcome. Dr. Hutchins points out that "if the wrong games (i.e. extremely violent games) are held up as evidence of unfairness, this may actually be counter-productive."
