"Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe's roster of "kombatants" was missing some key names on both sides. That was something series co-creator Ed Boon and the MK team had hoped to address with downloadable content, which never happened.

Boon had hinted at appearances from characters like Kung Lao and Doomsday in interviews, showing designs for one MK Vs. DC character that was planned for release, Quan Chi, first introduced in Mortal Kombat 4. The MK team lead released a render of the Mortal Kombat character via his Twitter today."

NowGamer: Warner Bros. Interactive is set to complete the acquisition of troubled Midway Games, but is it the last hurrah of an outmoded publisher?

Warner Bros. was the sole bidder for the majority of Midway's assets, including its Chicago and Seattle studios and the ubiquitous Mortal Kombat franchise. The $33 million sale has since been approved by a court hearing, while Midway's Newcastle and San Diego studios, which were not included in the deal along with a number of ageing sports titles, are set to close in the next 60 days if a buyer doesn't come forward.

The question is will gamers really care? The company was huge in the eighties, producing endless fun via its arcade division – but with the death of coin-ops, Midway has become something of a dinosaur, still relying on it's biggest franchise, Mortal Kombat.

The publisher of one of the world's most famous fighting game series is hoping to hold on to "Mortal Kombat," despite what people inferred from a recent Chapter 11 filing.

Yesterday, MTV Multiplayer readers voted for Capcom to buy the rights for "Mortal Kombat" from financially embattled publisher Midway.

They did this in reaction to recently released documents that identified the sale of the "MK" as a possible goal of the company's Chapter 11 bankruptcy. But a Midway spokesperson has told MTV Multiplayer that the company would prefer to hang on to the series.

Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono has responded to Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon's recent comment that MKVSDCU will "kick" Street Fighter IV's "ass" by saying "bring it on!".

Ono-san issued the rebuke in an interview with VideoGamer.com from Leipzig Games Convention. But he also welcomed the competition, saying that if the Midway published title can convert comic fans to fighting game fans, then "the more the merrier".

He said: "You know what, if they can turn the comic fan into a fighting genre fan, the more the merrier. If they can kick our ass, so be it, bring it on! We're in the same team as far as we're concerned so if they can do it, great."

MTV Multiplayer writes: "There's a reason Scorpion can fight Superman in "Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe," but game's scribe (and veteran comic author) Jimmy Palmiotti says it doesn't really matter.

"Why is that guy fighting that guy?" said Palmiotti during a brief interview at Comic-Con. "Well, ha! Why? Because it's fun, that's why."

Comic fans up in arms about the unrealistic nature of the fighting mash-ups weren't the only ones with concerns, though. When Palmiotti and fellow comics veteran Justin Gray were brought in to work with Midway and DC, they found the two sides didn't see eye-to-eye."

Destructoid writes: "The guys at ArsTechnica have recently done their part to help rekindle the feud between Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Years ago, when Mortal Kombat was shiny, new, and very gory Ed Boon and Capcom had quite the verbal sparring match. At this year's Comic-Con, it looks as if Boon is not ready to hang up his gloves quite yet. When asked by Eurogamer if Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe was still in the running against the Street Fighter series, Boon had this to say:

'I think just from the history, we do. I think we'll kick their ass.... we're a wilder ride-a big rollercoaster ride-and they're a little bit tamer.'

Capcom community manager Seth Killian had this when prompted at Capcom's booth:

'You can't touch the mechanics of Street Fighter, and [SFIV] is really channeling back the classic mechanics that ignited the world... Mortal Kombat was riding the coattails of Street Fighter then, and I think Mortal Kombat may be riding the tails of Street Fighter as we move into 2009.'

There's no denying that the collaboration between the two franchises will be financially beneficial for both, but exactly how cynical are the publishers being about this "product"? Very, would be my answer.

A rather distasteful realisation sprang to my mind today when reviewing some updated screenshots of the title - many of the characters from the DC Universe appear to have been granted variations of moves already seen in the Mortal Kombat series, as can be seen here, with Flash using Cyrax's dash move to stun Superman...

Speaking to MCV, Midway's European marketing director Leonie Manshanden has revealed that the publisher is expecting very big things from upcoming Xbox 360 and PS3 beat 'em up, Mortal Kombat vs DS Universe.

Kotaku @ Comic-Con: We sat down with Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon tonight to chat about his latest project, Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe. Once again, we pestered Mr. Boon about the scrapped version of Mortal Kombat 8, once described by the long-term Midway dev as being heavily inspired by the look of Gears of War.

While that grittier, darker version of MK didn't make it far beyond the technology development stages - Boon told us there was little in the way of concept art for the grimier spin on the series - the next next Mortal Kombat may strive for more blood, more violence, more of everything that warrants an M-rating.
