Madden NFL 09

Is Madden 09 too noob-friendly?

Catering to new players runs the risk of alienating the fanbase

Rewind, Back Track, and Commentary
Rewind and Back Track are two new features that work together. Rewind is basically a “do-over” button - just press X and you travel back through time. Meanwhile, Back Track comes on when you really screw up a play. To help you learn from your mistake, it shows a replay during which announcers Chris Collinsworth and Tom Hammond explain your goofs in depth.

Casual Player: "Without Rewind, it would take me forever to actually win a game. And Back Track let’s me know how I might want to re-play a down so I can improve my game. It’s like having my own personal Madden coach. Isn't one of those guys on that HBO recap show?"

Hardcore Guy: "Rewind isn’t so bad, especially since I can re-do that one play the game screwed me over on. Perfect season, here I come. Great update to the commentary, too."

Camera, Graphics, and Animation
While Madden always looks good, this year’s graphics are a great deal better than 08, mostly thanks to lighting changes and more realistic (read: skinnier) character models. Animations are more realistic, thanks to a dynamic system that draws less from a pre-programmed cycle of movements. Finally, the camera has also been fiddled with, mostly during passing; the camera moves behind the QB and angles in such a way that all possible receivers are on screen.

Casual Player: "I hated when the screen didn’t show your receivers or let you know if they were covered. And better graphics make a better game, right?"

Hardcore Guy: "Even I disliked the camera, big ups on the new look for passing. I’d still buy the game even if the graphics and animations were same as last year, as long as the new rosters were accurate."
