We're getting a sneak glimpse of Far Cry 2 gameplay in a new little video that re-confirms the sequel is now due out autumn. Far Cry 2 is set to release this autumn, says Ubisoft. Originally the publisher had pegged the PC version for spring, but changed the date to a very general April '08-March '09 when PS3 and Xbox 360 versions were confirmed. "After a tech demo at Play.com Live presented by Patrick Redding, Game and Narrative Designer on the Ubisoft Montreal developed Far Cry 2, we asked Mr. Redding about plans for future downloadable content. Apparently, the infrastructure for future DLC is in place, and apparently some form of expansion is being planned. He also said that depending on the expansion, it might be released on another disc or via DLC methods on the consoles. However, he made clear that they're fully focused on getting the game done, and only have set structure in place to make things slightly easier when they get round to creating more content.

During a lecture on narrative design today, Ubisoft Montreal's Patrick Redding revealed that Far Cry 2's health system is tied to infection. Upon arriving in the game's fictitious African country, the player's character -- the strong, silent type -- is immediately stricken with malaria.

Ubisoft's Patrick Redding called this device the "ultimate mechanical drawback." The disease creates a dependence on medicine ('health packs'), but the pills aren't scattered throughout the plains or hidden inside crates. Instead, medicine can only be obtained from civilians. The developers use this device as one of the game's few "push" designs; otherwise, players control the order and scope of Far Cry 2.

"Far Cry 2 is an upcoming first person shooter that will be put out by Ubisoft on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC next month.

In a recent interview with CVG, Tech Director Dominic Guay talked about the process of developing for PlayStation 3, and he admitted that the Blu-ray was a big perk.

"The hard drive and Blu-ray are making our life easy considering FC2 is an open world continuously streamed around the player," said Guay."

Sony's complex PS3 hardware is a 'nice fit' for Ubisoft's ambitious Far Cry 2 - but developers Ubisoft Montreal admit that compromises have been made. "We were somewhat worried by some of the reported high complexity of developing for the PS3", reveals Tech Director Dominic Guay, "but the raw processing power is impressive".

After a slew of delays, and some unfavourable comparisons between 'identical' Xbox 360 and PS3 ports, it seems developers are finally getting to grips with Sony's machine. "We made sure we had a group of programmers that were not scared by complexity and had a large console programming experience to work on the initial PS3 R&D of Dunia (Far Cry 2's graphics engine). At that point, we didn't know what to expect."

There have been some incorrect reports around the web that Far Cry 2 will have mutant enemies or that your character will have some kind of mutation, and that Far Cry 2 is now PlayStation 3 exclusive.

Creative Director Clint Hocking puts these false reports to rest: there are no mutants of any kind in Far Cry 2 and Ubisoft are releasing Far Cry 2 simultaneously on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360!

Ubisoft has confirmed to VideoGamer.com that upcoming FPS Far Cry 2 will not be a PS3 console exclusive, as previously rumoured.

Internet reports had suggested the Xbox 360 version of the game had been canned when website xbox360wire.co.uk noticed UK retailer GAME had removed it from its listings, leaving only the PS3 and PC versions.

The spokesperson said: "We announced Far Cry 2 initially for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC and that's how it stands."

Far Cry 2 is looking fantastic, and was due out in April for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

That may now not be the case though, with evidence pointing towards a PS3 exclusive release for the Ubisoft title. Whether or not this could be console exclusive, or perhaps just a timed exclusive is not yet known.
