Dead Rising 2

6 of the best new weapons in Dead Rising 2

The sequel ups the gore levels to 11 with a genius set of new weapons

Let's be honest, the biggest thrill of the original Dead Rising isn't the story, the characters or even the supermarket location. It's twatting zombies in the face with guitars, snipping them in two with a pair of oversized garden shears and generally causing as much damage as possible with whatever comes to hand.

The good news then, is that Dead Rising 2's new developers - Blue Castle Games - are keen to give you even more tools to bring the pain as they demonstrated at Capcom's recent Captivate event in Monaco. New lead, ex-motorcross champion Chuck Greene, is set to tear up Fortune City with some of the most genius weapons we've seen yet. Here's our favourites so far...

Samurai sword
Yes, yes Dead Rising has a Katana too but here you can slice off specific body parts with the new swing motion which is context sensitive. We’re big fans of slicing zombies down the middle, mind.

Spiked propane tanks
Not only does it provide a tasty explosion to take out big groups of zombies but the sharp prongs make for a handy melee weapon before detonation too.

Paddle saw
Take one double-ended canoe paddle, strap a couple of chainsaws to each end and hey presto, you’ve got the perfect device to row your way through a sea of enemies.

Moose head
Strap this ornament onto Chuck's head and he can charge through packs of the undead with ease. No surprise to see this horned beast make an appearance since the devs are Canadian, eh?

Motorbike
With two revving chainsaws strapped to the handlebars, this dirt-bike can mow down tons of foes by ploughing through them, popping wheelies and heads as you go.

Drill bucket
The average bucket from the original provided hilarity when placed on a zombie's head but it was useless. Here you get a bucket with power-drills poking into it. Shove it on a foe's noggin and the screech of drills as they bore into the skull - complete with a fountain of claret - will provide sadistics pleasures again and again.

You'll also be pleased to know that the with this casino-heavy setting comes the ability to strafe while firing guns. Which comes in handy when you consider there are upto 1000 zombies on screen at times. In fact, at one point during our eyes-on time the dev spawned 7000 of the flaky-skinned terrors just to prove the power behind Dead Rising 2.

We have to admit, this sequel is incredibly similar to Dead Rising. From the game mechanics right down to the overall look, you'd be forgiven if you thought this was a hidden level/DLC package from the original. OK, so the in-game action we've seen was little more than a tech-demo (no actual missions were shown) and it's only in it's infancy in terms of development but early signs suggest it's going to be a near carbon copy.

We're sure it'll be good, but we're unsure whether it'll be anything revolutionary right now. We'll keep you posted on how it shapes up.

I don't really care about new weapons (though the paddle-saw does look sweet), what I'm REALLY worried about, and will be the main factors in whether I buy this or not, is decent survivor A.I, better save system, minimap with markable waypoints, no otis/tranciever guy, and less strict mission requirements.

@shadowless and liamrules: fire has to be one of THE WORST weapons against a zombie. zombies can't fell pain and they never stop. the only difference between fire and no weapons, is that you're on fire too when you get mauled.

chainsaws good and all, but you have to think of petrol and how heavy it is. if you can use one, samurai sword is your best bet.

I really REALLY hope they don't tweak the system too much. New weapons and location? Good, that's okay. Maybe some SMALL tweaks to the save system but nothing more. Also they NEED to keep the time limit just maybe make it longer.

Amazing, I can't wait for this game to come out so I can use some of these weapons, I wonder if your are going to be able to make these weapons. In the trailer it said "Handyman--*Check*" so I wonder if there will be some kind of invention system.

an invention system would be pretty sweet, i hope theres a levling system, so you start off by making samurai swords at the ends of the paddle and then move up to chainsaws
