Rockstar's Bully Coming to Japan on the Xbox 360 and PS2 (News)

ZeniMax Asia K.K. announced today that Bethesda Softworks will ship Bully for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system to Japanese retailers on July 24th.

Bully, the critically-acclaimed title by Rockstar Games, allows you to experience the life of a troublesome schoolboy. With both single-player missions and 2 player mini games, you'll stand up to bullies, get picked on by teachers, play pranks on malicious kids, win or lose the girl, and ultimately learn to navigate the obstacles of the fictitious boarding school, Bullworth Academy. Originally released on the Xbox 360 in 2008 and the PlayStation®2 system in 2006, this is the first time the game will be available in the Japanese market.

A Brazilian judge has banned the sale of Rockstar's Bully.

Judge Flavio Rabello barred the sale of the game in Brazil (we're assuming that's all versions), following a request from a youth centre in Brazilian state Rio Grande do Sul.

The "aggravating factor" resulting in the Bully ban, says State prosecutor Alcindo Bastos, is the fact that "everything in the game takes place inside a school," which apparently isn't fair ...

Bully has taken a beating in Brazil, where a judge suspended sales of the video game on the grounds it is too violent for young children and teenagers, a prosecutor said Thursday.

Judge Flavio Rabello prohibited the game from being imported, distributed, sold or promoted on Web sites or in stores in Latin America's largest nation, said Rio Grande do Sul state prosecutor Alcindo Bastos. Companies have 30 days to comply with the judge's order.

Bastos said the judge found the game was inappropriate for children.

"The aggravating factor is that everything in the game takes place inside a school," Bastos said. "That is not acceptable."

Player complaints claim the patch is breaking more than it's fixing.
Shortly after the release of Bully: Scholarship Edition for the Xbox 360 and Wii, 360 owners were noting that the game was susceptible to game freezes and various bugs taking place during regular play. Rockstar Games responded by saying it was horrified by problems in the retail build, and started putting together a patch to fix the issues found in the title.

Last week, the patch went live and would automatically download the next time players signed into Live with the game. That's where the story ends, right? Unfortunately, that is not the case as Kotaku reports gamers are complaining that the patch is doing more harm than good, by not fixing the supposedly patched issues and even adding new problems, like audio stuttering and increased frequency of freezes. That being said, others are saying they have seen minimal problems before and after the patch, and some are experiencing smooth sailing after having troubles beforehand.

However, even after downloading the patch there are still many complaints from gamers who continue to say the game suffers from audio problems, framerate issues and outright instances of locking up.

On Monday, MTV Multiplayer contacted Rockstar about the whereabouts of the patch. As of this writing, Rockstar still doesn't have one, as the patch is currently sitting in Microsoft's Xbox Live certification queue. Rockstar said they will have a "broad worldwide announcement" tomorrow morning.

Does that mean the patch is actually coming tomorrow morning? Not necessarily.

Publisher apologizes for crashes and other performance problems with Scholarship Edition of schoolyard scrapper, says a fix is on the way.

"We are very aware of the problems some people have been experiencing with the Xbox 360 version of Bully: Scholarship Edition and have been doing everything within our powers to resolve these issues as quickly as possible," a Rockstar representative said, adding, "We apologize wholeheartedly for the inconvenience that this matter has caused some owners of the game."

Rockstar is currently working on a fix for the problems that should be released through Xbox Live as a title update sometime within the next week.

A coalition of groups representing four million teachers from eight unions in several countries - Australia, Britain, Canada, South Korea, the Caribbean and the United States - is urging retailers to refuse to sell Bully: Scholarship Edition.

Bully: Scholarship Edition features a shaven-headed teenager who adjusts to life at a new boarding school by harassing others, which the organizations say glorifies bullying. The abuse includes dunking pupils' heads in toilets, photographing them naked and physically assaulting them. Teachers are also targeted.

A port of the critically acclaimed PlayStation 2 title, the Xbox 360 version of Bully adds eight new missions, a competitive multiplayer mode, new classes and clothes. A violent new video game which is set in a school and encourages players to act out assaults on pupils and teachers has been condemned by anti-bullying campaigners and teaching unions.

The game, called Bully, features a shaven-headed pupil who torments fellow students and teachers at his school.

Critics said the game was "glorifying" school bullying and called for it to be banned.

The PC World and Currys chain of stores said it had already decided not to stock the game. A spokesman said: "We don't think this is suitable for sale in our stores. We are careful about what we sell and this is something we have decided not to list."

Although the date wasn't on exactly on target, it seems that GoNintendo's speculation that the Bully Scholarship Edition would hit in early March (based on a listing at Gamestop) was right on the money. Rockstar has announced that the school year at Bullworth Academy will begin in the US on March 5th and March 7th in the UK with all the crotch kicking, swirlies, hiding in lockers, stealing and boy kissing you can handle.

Rockstar Games is best known for its Grand Theft Auto series, but Wii and Xbox 360 owners will soon discover another worthy title in its library. Bully: Scholarship Edition arrives on Wii and 360 on March 4 in the US and March 7 in the UK. Both version are priced at $49.99 and include the original game along with a bevy of extras.

Added to the original PS2 version are eight new missions, four new school classes (biology, music, math and geography), new unlockable items and clothing, new two-player offline minigames, new awards and, of course, Achievements.

According to French site Jeux-France.com, the remake of Rockstar's PS2 title won't be hitting the Wii and 360 until 7 February. It had previously been listed as appearing this year.

Given that 2007 is now drawing to a close and we've not seen much of it yet, this isn't exactly a huge surprise. Still, if Rockstar feels it needs more time, so be it ¿ the PS2 version received glowing reviews when it was released in 2006, so a little extra development time will hopefully ensure that the 360 and Wii version are of the same standard.

After the furore surrounding Rockstar Games' Canis Canem Edit (a.k.a. Bully) eventually died down, few could argue that all the game contained was mild school ground pranks that left a warm, fuzzy feeling of nostalgia inside.

Thankfully, it seems that despite all the negative press, Canis Canem Edit has finally received the recognition that it deserves, picking up Best Videogame Script award at last night's Writer's Guild of Great Britain Awards 2007.

In spite of all the critical acclaim, most people glossed right over Rockstar Games' Bully; it even received a coveted 10 in the pages of EGM. Rockstar isn't giving up on the new IP just yet, however, as they've announced Bully: Scholarship Edition for both Xbox 360 and Wii, complete with tweaked visuals and additional content.
Other than that, we're in the dark, but Rockstar says the revamped Bully is coming to both platforms this "winter." This could be the perfect game to cool down from the fall gaming season with in early 08 -- keep watching as we learn more -- but here's a question: where's the PlayStation 3 version?
