Want to play Super Mario Bros. 3 on the DS?

What’s the best Mario game of all time? If you said Super Mario Bros. 3 for the NES, you’d be right. Maybe that’s why fan-hacker SKJim is on a mission to recreate Super Mario Bros. 3 for the Nintendo DS. Using assets from New Super Mario Bros for the DS, SKJim has just finished recreated all of World 1 and most of World 2.

Check out the video below for some footage of the fan-hack in motion. Fans will notice that this isn’t a pixel perfect revision. The author takes a few artistic liberties, plus some of the power-ups from Super Mario Bros. 3 are not available. Still, it’s a mighty impressive project. You can find out more about it, by heading here

I'm a SMW guy but I do think SM3 is up there, however one can point out the most 2D Mario games are almost the same. Also you could play SM3 if you have a DSLite with SM Advanced 3.

Well an A for effort but most likely it will get shut down. I think my fav Mario game is Mario 64 but that's just a time of my childhood gaming that started it all. Yeah I'm glad I have the DS Lite with the GBA slot!

Im another SMW supporter. Way better than 3.

Sorr, that should be Super Mario Advance 4 not 2 (2 is SMW)

You can already play SMB3 on DS, Just buy the GBA version(Super Mario Advance 2)and put it in the DS's GBA slot! And as an added bonus, it is the upgraded version from Super Mario Allstars. There are usually a few copies avaliable on Ebay (or you could buy my copy for the right price!).

    Agreed world is the best.

@Baron164: Thanks for mentioning World. I don't know why everyone continually dismiss the game so much.

Super Mario World and Galaxy 2 are the best, not 3. And if this guy wants to finish this, he had better keep it a little more private until he's finished. I heard Nintendo has shut down some fan-made games before by sending one of those 'cease and desist' letters when the game is almost finished. Then no one gets to play it, and I would really enjoy this game almost as much as a certain other remake being made about a certain Game Boy game involving bounty hunting and eradicating a certain life-draining species.

My personal favorite Mario is a tie between 3 and World. But this is a very cool hack. I still miss the Raccoon tail.

I don't know. It doesn't seem quite the same without the ability to fly.

Yeah this will unfortunately get a C&D before it's finished. If only companies understood that they wouldn't lose profits from fan-made content... They need to be a little more liberal with the properties they own.

I came in here to make an argument against SMB 3 being the best Mario ever, but I have no evidence to support that claim. I don't know how you could name a champion between Mario 3, Mario 64, and Mario Galaxy 1 or 2. I know that 64 hasn't stood the test of time quite like 3, but it was still an amazing game in its day.

There was a mod to completely make Morrowind off of the Oblivion engine, then Bethesda got a cease and desist order against it. Hopefully that doesn't happen here. Hooray for negativity!
