Video: Play Gears of War 3 on Hardcore. On Normal, it virtually plays itself

So Gears of War 3 is brilliant. You know that now. Myself and Mr. Charlie Barratt certainly know it too. He wrote our review, and I've been happily playing it at home all week. But during that thoroughly rewarding quality time with my sofa, I've noticed something that you really need to be aware of. The difficulty levels in Gears of War 3 are not what you'll expect of the series. They're not what you'll expect at all.

In short, the new Hardcore is roughly the equivalent of the Normal setting of Gears 1 and 2. And Normal? Well let's just say that your squad AI is now so good, and the enemy AI so weak and stupid, that I managed to get through nearly all of Act 2 without firing a shot outside of full-scale boss fights and the odd compulsory set-piece. Standard nuts-and-bolts warfare? The game didn't even need me there. Actually, let's not just say that. Let's watch that in this video I've made.

Quick note: In the interests of not taking up your entire day, I've only included a run-through of Act 2, Chapter 1 here, but I assure you I managed to get through Chapters 1 - 5 at home using this same pacifist methodology. The only edits made to this video are some fast-forwarding - again in the interests of time - and the removal of the cut-scenes to avoid spoilers. It gets a bit hectic at times, but just keep an eye on the ammo counters...

Saw you've been playing that, glad to hear it's as good as it looks. Probably going to be doing the campaign in 4-man co-op, we'll try an insane run eventually but as that's locked at the start I guess we'll do it on hardcore first. Thanks for the tip.

Cole is such a lazy bastard, lol
  • marioman50 - September 15, 2011 9:53 a.m.

    Sorry, meant Marcus ;P

Maybe they'll patch the difficulty? Hurr-hurr-hurr. Anyway, I always play things through on Hardcore first ANYWAY, so this won't be too much of a problem, and if it's only the difficulty of Gears 2's hardcore on #3's Insane, I'm set. Still,, though, if it;'s too easy I'm going to be a bit disappointed :/ Looking forward to being able to play this with up to four mates, though. That is, if 4 of my mates actually GET the game. Or if I ever mange to GET four mates... Plus, love how the first thing he shoots is a chicken. Class.

Wow.. obviously this is no testament to the quality of the game, but did they need to dumb normal down THAT much? What does Casual mode play like?
  • Plan10FromOuterSpace - September 15, 2011 12:02 p.m.

i was just wondering the exact some thing, maybe they just remove the enemies entirely and allow you to take a peaceful stroll through the world of gears...
  • DuffMufflin - September 15, 2011 11:43 p.m.

Or perhaps durin that peaceful stroll youll see locusts waiting for you in the middle of chapters holding a tray with cups of water for you and your teammates, telling everyone "go get em tiger!", and giving everyone a pat on the back for good luck.

Because of the chipmunk voices, I will never be able to take this game seriously.
  • cubine - September 15, 2011 10:17 a.m.

I suppose this could turn normal (or God forbid, casual) difficulty into a contest to see who can get through the game with the fewest shots fired.
  • ObliqueZombie - September 15, 2011 11:49 a.m.

GREAT video, David. I got quite a good laugh out of it. The chipmunk voices were the cherries on top. And I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it! I was a little worried with the "9" rating, though fantastic that is, and I wasn't sure how everyone else would take a liking to it. Hype is the worst thing about the video game industry. Hardcore shall be my first difficulty.

Well at least your AI buddies actually do something this time around...
  • Plan10FromOuterSpace - September 15, 2011 12:01 p.m.

Did David just talk about AI without mentioning FEAR? Anyways, at least knowing about this in advance will stop it being an issue, so thanks for the warning xD

I don't know, they look pretty tough. I mean that chicken took the shotgun blast like a COCK and kept on trucking. (Can I say that? plznoban) I remember one of your older articles on lengthening games though, and I've been strictly following your "play on hard first rule", so hey, no skin off my nose.
  • lars-paymans - September 15, 2011 12:23 p.m.

Definately playing this on Hardcore, and when i finish it alone i will play it with my friends on insane. Good video ;)
  • db1331 - September 15, 2011 12:36 p.m.

    Does this game have aim-assist?
  • DuffMufflin - September 15, 2011 11:33 p.m.

Nope. Never has and hopefully never will
  • Gruff182 - September 16, 2011 4:01 a.m.

No, they just give you a targeting reticule the size of a car instead.
  • ThatGuyFromTV - September 15, 2011 2 p.m.

NOW do you see why the AI in these games are always dirt stupid??
  • ThatGuyFromTV - September 15, 2011 2:01 p.m.

The teammate AI, I mean. Not the enemy AI.
  • Fox_Mulder - September 15, 2011 8:20 p.m.

    Gears of Peace!
